  4. What to Be Looking For and When September – December SAT, ACT & SAT Subject Tests October – January College Applications Scholarships Ongoing Financial Aid January – March 1

TAKING SAT/ACT • SAT – Nov. 2 and Dec. 7 • ACT – Oct. 26, Dec. 14 • Waivers are available with both tests if the student is receiving free or reduced lunch – must see Mrs. Martin • Be aware scores are important for admissions and scholarship competition • Important to take it early • If you are planning to play sports in college make certain that you use the NCAA Clearinghouse as one of the four sites to receive scores • Most colleges do SUPER SCORE

  6. How to Go About Taking SAT and ACT • Student must register on their own – create an account at www.collegeboard.com establishing a user name and password. Then click on “Register” • For ACT they will register the same way at a different site – www.act.org - must take the ACT Plus Writing • To send their score from last spring, when their go to the site – they will answer 2 questions on first page – say Yes to the first one (have you ever taken ACT) and No to the second (have you ever registered for the ACT). There is a fee. • Students on free or reduced lunch can receive 2 SAT fee waivers and 2 ACT fee waivers – see Mrs. Martin in guidance

SAT Subject Tests These are required for admission to particular colleges and universities and are also used for placement at some colleges They are given on the same day as the SAT; a student can take up to three in one day; each one hour long If required for admission take in the fall If required for placement take in late spring Do be aware that graduation is on the same day as the June SAT… therefore, I would not schedule it then

College Applications Help your student narrow down their choices – based on a major that fits their interest, not their friends’ choices Attend Open House Events – several coming up the next few Saturdays – many request you to go online to register for the event Review the college’s website to determine from what source they which for you to use to apply UNC-CH , Davidson, Duke Guilford, Meredith, Salem, UNC-A, UNC-W, Wake Forest and Warren Wilson – Common Application, NC State – Wolfpaw account set up through NCSU, others – CFNC If you go through CFNC for Davidson, Duke, NC State, UNC-Chapel Hill or Wake Forest University it should direct you to the application of their choice

When Applying, They Should Consider: Public and private (independent) colleges Community colleges Vocational colleges Help them remember deadlines – place them on a calendar Help them explore options – some community colleges programs have deadlines as early Dec. 1; i.e. Mercy College of Health Sciences – others have pre-requisites that they could fulfill through CCP classes

  10. Be Aware of Minimum Admission Requirements at UNC Colleges • GPA 2.5 on weighted scale • SAT score of 800 (reading + math) • ACT score 17 composite • All UNC schools will superscore (take the highest reading and math from different tests and combine)

Paying for Applications • Payment can be made with debit/credit card online • If you have taken the SAT and used a fee waiver and are currently on free or reduced lunch – you can receive 4 free application waivers. • If using a waiver – print off the confirmation sheet if going through CFNC and attach the waiver (exception – UNCC – must apply through the college’s website). If using the Common Application send the waiver individually

College Application Week • Source to offer applications FREE for ALL students • November 18-22 • Many PRIVATE colleges in North Carolina will not charge to apply during this week ONLY • Check the BHS guidance website in October for a list • Students will be able to sign up that week to complete applications in the Career Center

Admission at the Community College • Anyone with a diploma and can enroll in classes • No test scores are required but can be used for placement if you have them • Placement tests are required for academic courses but are free and the student calls to schedule an appointment to test • If they are planning to transfer, know that articulation agreements are in place with the UNC Colleges and community colleges that allow many courses to transfer – HELP THEM RESEARCH – the four year schools have the articulation sheets on their website – check to see that they are transferring for something needed • Check out the colleges you are considering for 2+2 programs where the 4yr college will guarantee the student junior status when transferring • Much cheaper - $ 858 for 12 semester hours • CCC offers several scholarships – Deadline is April 1 • Some programs, especially nursing has many pre-requisites and early deadlines

Scholarships • Very competitive • Test scores and GPA are very important • Community service is also very important • Check the college’s website to which you are applying – some offer scholarship consideration if you apply on the first deadline (ASU & UNCC); others offer scholarships with particular deadlines; others if you apply early – you need to email the admissions office and ask as to the procedure to be considered for scholarships through their university • Some majors offer more than others – nursing, agriculture and some areas of education • Listed on BHS guidance website

Many Sources for Scholarships • Collegeboard –Go to Big Future on the website • CFNC – Go under “Pay” tab; multiple scholarships • Take the “Financial Literacy 101” quiz and score 80% and you are automatically registered for a scholarship • Pay attention to the school you are applying for opportunities – Example, NC State offered those who followed them online to win a $1000 scholarship if they sent a 3 minute video

  16. When Completing a Scholarship Application • If possible type, if not write in BLACK INK • Go over the material your student has typed online… so easy to overlook typos • Have them read the directions carefully and early in order to get the attachments together • Watch guidance office deadlines and meet them • Check for grammatical errors • If recommendations are needed, give people at least one week to provide those • Request that all seniors request 3 recommendations and turn in an activity sheet to have on file in guidance office (guide is located on the guidance page website

  17. Communication for Scholarships • Email list – make sure you’ve completed the small paper that you received at the first senior meeting and returned it to guidance • Text Message list – Text @bhssen2014 to 415-944-3962 • Frequently check the BHS guidance website • Many scholarships have their applications online • Sign the Blue Book in the guidance office

NCAA Clearinghouse • Anyone playing sports in college must register at www.eligibilitycenter.org • Go to the website to register – takes several weeks for the process to be completed • Athlete must be registered before they can go on an official visit • Costs $70 ; but fee waivers are available for those on free or reduced lunch • Must have official scores for SAT and ACT sent to them – code is 9999 • Must request the guidance office to send a transcript

  19. Financial Aid • Must complete FAFSA after January 1, 2014 • Priority deadline for North Carolina is March 1 • Make certain that you go to www.fafsa.gov not www.fafsa.com. The .com site will charge you and this is a free application • When going on the website – first, go to the Pin site at the top and create a pin for your student on one parent • The application is linked to the IRS and it will allow you to download your financial information while completing the form…. must have submitted your taxes at least two weeks earlier • This is required to receive Pell Grant and other federal and state aid • FAFSA Day is February 22, 2014 – you can register at www.CFNC.org • Completion of FAFSA is required of some scholarships – i.e. The Golden Leaf found on CFNC

Transcripts • Required by all colleges in some format • Carefully review to understand what they are wanting and from what source • i.e. NCSU – wants an unofficial scanned into the online application • i.e. UNC Chapel Hill – wants an official transcript from Powerschool ONLY, not CFNC – not available at this time • i.e. – Others will take the transcript from NC Wise

How to Get a Transcript • You can get a transcript from CFNC; however, this will not have your spring SAT/ACT scores nor the courses in which you are currently scheduled and the rank is not correct • THEREFORE WE RECOMMEND AT THIS TIME TO COME BY THE GUIDANCE OFFICE AND PICK UP A REQUEST FORM FOR YOUR PARENT TO SIGN AND BRING IT BACK SO WE CAN MAIL THE TRANSCRIPT WITH THE ATTACHMENTS (TEST SCORES, CURRENT SCHEDULE AND EXPLANATION OF RANK)

  22. Transcripts for CCP Students • If you have taken a CCP course you must go to Cleveland Community College and request that a transcript be sent. The colleges will not accept the college credit from a high school transcript. • Cost: $5

  23. Decide to Go to Work • It will benefit the student to be a CTE completer • This allows you to take Work Keys. This is an IMPORTANT test! As a senior it is free here at Burns. Many companies now require it for employment and you must pay to take it after graduation. In some companies, this test may determine your beginning pay. • There are practice tests that you can work on in the Career Center with Mrs. Hamrick
