  3. Objective • SWBAT to critique their “IWNKW” rhetorical precis by highlighting the elements of a precis in their own statements and comparing their precis in groups. They will then synthesize the best elements of their precis by writing a group precis statement for “IWNKW”.

Rhetorical Precis • Last night’s homework: Write a rhetorical precis for Susan Klebold’s “I Will Never Know Why” by using the handouts given • Today: We will critique our rhetorical precis by highlighting the different precis requirements and comparing them amongst your groups. You will then write a group precis taking the best elements from all group members.

  8. Sentence #1 will include the following: • Name of the author and (if possible: a phrase describing the credentials of the author) • The type (e.g. essay, lecture, research paper, etc.) and title of the work • The date, if available (inserted in parentheses) • A rhetorically accurate verb (such as “assert,” “argue,” “suggest,” “imply,” “claim,” etc.) that describes what the author is doing in the text • A “THAT” clause in which you state the major assertion (thesis statement) of the author’s text

Sentence #2 will include the following: • An explanation of how the author develops and/or supports the thesis (such as by comparing and contrasting, narrating, illustrating, defining, RHETORICAL ELEMENTS, etc.) • Present your explanation in the same chronological order/order of frequency + importance that the items of support are presented by the author in the text

  10. Sentence #3 will include the following: • A statement of the author’s purpose • Followed by an IN ORDER TO clause in which you explain what the author wants the audience to do or feel as a result of reading the work

  11. Sentence #4 will include the following: • A description of the intended audience • A description of the tone the author uses

  12. Your Rhetorical Precis • Highlight and identify your 4 sentences in your precis. • Make note of anything you may have missed. • Put a * by the best sentence in your precis. • Share your precis with your group.

Sample Rhetorical Precis: Highlight • In O magazine’s article, “I Will Never Know Why,” Susan Klebold, mother of Dylan Klebold from the Columbine tragedy, asserts that she is not the irresponsible mother that the media and society made her out to be. By providing emotional anecdotes and statistical information, Klebold proves that she tried to be a good mother but missed the signs of her son’s suicidal tendencies. Klebold hopes that others will understand her position of helplessness and will empower themselves to identify the signs of depression in order to prevent future tragedies from occurring. By reaching out to those who judged her, she attempts to shed light on her own struggles through her reflective and sincere tone.

Group Rhetorical Precis • As a group, write a rhetorical precis using the best elements of your combined precis statements. • Make sure that your group precis statement is accurate, concise, and includes the 4 necessary traits of a rhetorical precis. • Each person in the group will take turns writing 1 sentence!

  15. Homework: • Revise your precis based on our activity today and TYPE up the newest version of your precis for homework.

  16. PAPA Square • As a group, identify the best Purpose, Argument, Persona, and Audience explanations + quotes and create a group PAPA square to accompany your rhetorical precis.
