What do these words have in common? Unit 2 ● Week 5 sickly, hardly, quickly, slowly, carefully All of these spelling words have the suffix –ly. A suffix changes the base word’s part of speech. In this case, -ly changes an adjective into an adverb.
What do these words have in common? wonderful, beautiful, graceful, spoonful, thoughtful The suffix –ful changes a noun into an adjective. Sometimes –ly is added to the suffix –ful which makes the adjective into an adverb, as in beautifully.
What do these words have in common? darkness, shapeless, ageless, illness, goodness, spotless, painless, weakness These words have the suffixes –less and –ness. The suffix –less means without, so ageless means without age. The suffix –ness means a state of being. Goodness is the state of being good: “That doughnut has chocolate goodness!”
What do these words have in common? darkest, clearest These words have the suffix –est. –est indicates the superlative. Relative to the situation, there is nothing darker than the darkest. It can’t be darkester.
