  8. SEMINAR • Every Thursday (Section 15) • Thursdays are 9:00 PM EST • Please adjust to your time zone • Not required but highly encouraged • A lot of fun • Get to learn from everyone

  9. KAPLAN CLASSES • Classes are 10 weeks in length • The last week does not have a seminar and is more reflection, to say good-bye, and exchange emails if desired. • Each week comprises 1 unit • Week 1 = Unit 1 • Units begin every Wednesday and end the following Tuesday at 11:59 PM EST.

  10. KAPLAN CLASSES (CONT) • Each Unit will include the following: • Seminar (Units 1-9 only – No seminars in Unit 10) • Discussion • Participation • Homework (usually) • Weeks might also include the following • Quiz

Communication is important • It is important to maintain communicate with me as much as possible. • Do not wait until after the fact • If you feel you need to drop, please talk to me first • Can be a miscommunication or something we can work with • It is important for both of us to maintain in touch with another

  12. MAKE A POINT TO ATTEND SEMINAR • Why? • We will be discussing and expanding on the readings • Seminars add to your understanding of the weekly material • In addition, it is a FUN time when we can interact with each other

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS • First post by Saturday, 2 additional posts on 2 different days • At least 3 posts on 3 different days • Complete, well thought-out responses in Standard English • Initial post should be at least 100 words • Proofread response for spelling and grammar • Reference course materials and other sources • Feel free to use other resources • Think outside the box • Be sure to cite the resources

  19. DISCUSSION CHECK LIST • Check – Did you answer the question? • It is not uncommon for students to get a little off-track and forget to answer the question asked. Make sure this does not happen to you as it can affect your grade. • Suggestion – Type it in Microsoft Word • This gives you time to think it through and to correct errors in spelling and/or grammar, which also can affect your grade.

HOMEWORK EXPECTATIONS • Assignments are due by 11:59 PM EST on Tuesday • Try not to wait until the last minute to submit • Plan ahead! • You never know what will prevent you from meeting the deadline • Do not do everything in one day • You will not learn anything • It is against Kaplan’s policy!

BACK-UP PLAN • We all experience computer issues from time-to-time • Print out materials at the beginning of the week • Keep all Professors and Help Desk phone on paper • Use the syllabus • Do it now! Create a back-up plan • Find local places where you can access a computer • Save your documents often! Use a USB drive or Dropbox.com

  31. THE DISCUSSION BOARD REQUIREMENT • Students are to post a minimum of three posts per discussion thread. One initial response and two replies to their classmates • Posting on a minimum of three different days, for example; Wednesday, Friday and Monday • The first post must be made by Saturday – no exceptions (but the sooner the better) • Be substantive. Use 100 words minimum of each of the the three required responses. Say something meaningful! Add Value! • Spelling, Grammar, punctuation all matter. You will lose points for misspelled or misused words, poor grammar or incorrect punctuation including capitalization.

  37. WEEK 1 DISCUSSION AND PARTICIPATION • Introduce yourself! • Part 1: Introduce yourself to your classmates and instructor! For this first Unit discussion, please tell us briefly something about yourself and why you chose your major. Also include a few sentences on what you learned from taking the Keirsey Temperment Sorter II Personality Instrument. Part 2: Share with us one of your previous "first-time" experiences. This should be something that you might have been concerned with learning how to do at first but later found easier. Some suggestions are:Your first time learning how to send an e-mail. Your first time learning how to use instant message. Your first time learning how to buy something online. Your first time learning something new. Your answers to these questions should all be submitted together as one response. Participation • Post at least 2 other messages in response to your classmates’ postings. Don’t forget the class rules for responses to our discussion forum
