  1. Bonding

  2. Types of Bonding • Ionic Bonding (ions are formed and held together by charges) • Covalent Bonding (When elements share electrons) • Hydrogen bonding (Not a real bond just a strong attraction between hydrogen and oxygen) • London Forces or Van der Waal Forces (what hold many molecules of the same compound together)

  3. Ionic Bonds: Naming Binary Compounds • Binary Compounds have only two elements • Name 1st element (usually a metal) • Name 2nd element (usually a nonmetal) • Keep only first syllable of 2nd element then add –ide to the end

  4. Name NaCl • Sodium • Chlorine • Chlor • Chloride • Sodium Chloride

  5. Ionic Compounds:Writing formulas for Binary Ionic • First write the symbol for each element in compound • Then give subscripts to balance charges (charges usually follow Periodic trends)

  6. Write the formula for Calcium Bromide • Ca • Br • Ca has a 2+ charge when an ion • Br has a 1- charge when an ion • CaBr2

  7. Polyatomic Ionic Compounds • Ionic compound made of 3 or more elements. • Polyatomic ions are ions made up of 2 or more elements.

  8. PO43- Phosphate CO32- Carbonate SO42- Sulfate NO31- Nitrate CrO42- Chromate ClO31- Chlorate CN 1- Cyanide CH3COO 1- or (C2H3O21-) Acetate OH 1- Hydroxide NH41+ Ammonium List of Polyatomic Ions

  9. Advance Polyatomic Ions • If you have one less Oxygen then the -ate form you change the –ate to –ite • SO32- sulfite • If you have one more Oxygen then the –ate form you just add per- to the front • SO52- persulfate • If you have two less Oxygen then the –ate form you add hypo- to the –ite form • SO22- hyposulfite

  10. Naming Polyatomic Ions • Name the 1st ion • Name the 2nd ion • Exp: CaSO4 • Calcium Sulfate

  11. Writing formulas for Polyatomic compounds • First write the symbol for each ion • Then balance the charges, if you have to balance the charge of a polyatomic ion use parentheses ()

  12. What is the formula forBarium hydroxide • Ba • OH • Ba has a charge of 2+ • OH has a charge of 1- • Ba(OH)2
