4. Pediatric Concerns in a Disaster • Pediatrics often overlooked in planning • Vulnerable population • Missing families or caregivers • Close quarters • Poor hygiene • Poor nutrition

5. MEP-P Project Context • Idea born out of 2007 RSV incident • 1 of 11 in nation to be awarded a grant • Focus on Anchorage • Rural Alaska impacts Anchorage • Outside assistance delayed and unlikely

6. MEP-P Members • Committee started by the All Alaska Pediatric Partnership • Includes 4 Anchorage hospitals, Mat Su, Fairbanks, Peninsula, North Star • Muni HHS & OEM, State DHSS, Red Cross, ASD, ANHC, APCA • Collaboration is a bonus benefit! • Results so far: Recent surge was handled well

Flood, Wildfire Pandemic Flu, Major Earthquake Bus Crash Local epidemic MEP-P Basics • “All-hazards” broad spectrum approach • Goal: To increase Anchorage pediatric medical surge by 100% with normal standard of care and 200% with altered standards of care • 3 main approaches • Curriculum • Equipment • Exercise • 2 other pieces • Ethics • Community

Pediatric Assessment Triangle work of Breathing Appearance Circulation to Skin MEP-P Curriculum • Three levels of training: BLS, ALS and JIT (Just In Time) • Based on PEPP course • Ideally for all Health Care Providers • Begin with Non-peds out-of- hospital providers www.PEPPsite.com www.jumpstarttriage.com

9. MEP-P Equipment • Developing “Go Kits” to respond to rural emergencies • Focus on ventilators • Increasing Anchorage area stock of pediatric supplies • Adding infant and child needs to current stockpiles

10. MEP-P Exercise • 2 Exercises planned: • May 10th Hillside Wildfire with entire city • Test pediatric medical surge in Anchorage • Examine and test training needs • Evaluate use of pediatric equipment and supplies • End of June RSV Tabletop • Mobilize “Go Kit” • “Final Exam”

11. MEP-P Ethics • Look at ventilators and other scarce resource allocation for children • Starting with SOFA scoring protocols already in development • Making discussion as transparent as possible • Process will continue beyond this project

MEP-P Community • Coordinating with Muni Emergency Operations Center • Encouraging shelter-in-place for families and children to mitigate surge at hospitals • Addressing concerns of tech dependent & special needs children • Discharge planning recommendations • Improve existing stockpiles with infant and pediatric supplies
