General Adaptation Syndrome • Definition: a three stage response of the body to stress
Alarm Stage • Pupils dilate • Hearing sharpens • Adrenaline is released • Heart rate increases • Muscles tense • “fight” or “flight” stage
Resistance Stage • Alarm stage response returns to normal • The body resists chronic diseases but is more likely to get acute diseases • If the stressor (s) is/are not removed, the body will proceed to the exhaustion stage.
Exhaustion Stage • Body becomes tired of coping with stress • Alarm stage response returns • Illness occurs • Death
Psychosomatic Illness • Definition: symptoms that occur in the body because of stress in the mind or emotion. • People with a high stress level have a 50% greater chance of becoming ill due to stress.
Get plenty of rest • Exercise regularly • Eat nutritiously • Find ways to express anger constructively • Find ways to relax • Learn to say no • Do not use tobacco, alcohol or other drugs • Set priorities
Do something for yourself each day. • Use time management • Don’t worry about everyone liking you • Communicate your stress with other people in your life. • Focus on the good things in your life. • Talk to your parents about how they manage their stress • Differentiate between eustress and distress
