  8. Definition • Checks and balances gives each branch of government ways to limit the power of the other two.

  9. Purpose • Checks and balances were put in place to protect against abuses of power

  10. Executive checks Legislative • May veto acts of Congress • May call Congress into special session

  11. Executive Checks Judicial • President appoints federal judges

  12. Legislative checks Executive • May override presidential veto • Approves appointments of judges • Approves treaties • May impeach President
