  3. Canary islands Facts Currency converter The largest of the 7 islands is Tenerife The official language is Spanish. The population for all the islands is 1,605,400/558 people per sq. miles. The size of all the islands is 2875 sq. miles. The currency that they use is the Euro. The biggest island of Hawaii is bigger than all of the Canary Islands put together. The Canary Islands are about 400 sq. miles bigger than the state of Delaware. People that live in the Canary Island normally have houses that are square and have stairs that go to their roofs. The average house costs 219,500 Euros.

  5. Government • The Canaries form an "Autonomous Community" within the Kingdom of Spain. The islands have their own Government, Parliament and Administration, established by the Statute of Autonomy of the Canary Islands. The Canarian fiscal and economic system is different from the general Spanish one, which is in force in the major part of the Mainland. • Since they are a part of Spain they are part of the European Union but they are exempt from some things.

  6. Religion • Like Spain, the Canaries belong to the Catholic Church, in the countryside many small temples and shrines dedicated to local saints are open for tourists to visit. • Most countries have people with many different religions and the Canary Islands are no exception.

  7. History of the Canary Islands • In 1976 the Canary Islands claimed to have seen Ufo’s on the following Islands Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera, Grand Canary, and by a ship at sea. There was said to be over 100 people who had seen this Ufo. • In 1543 Alonso de Espinosa was said to have work in four different books and he gave Tenerife its early history, an account of inhabitants. Also their customs, food, dress, marriages, training of war, and mode of interment. • The Canary Islands had a independence movement act in 1979. They tried to make the country independent, but the Spaniards didn’t like that, so they bombed a mall in the Island of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in 1976. Later they had Bombed an airport in the Island of Las Palmas on March 27, 1977. In 1979 they put down the Independence Movement.

  10. The Laud • The laúd is a plectrum plucked chordophone from Spain. • The laúd belongs to the cittern family of instruments, even though its name means means lute. • It has 12 metallic strings. Laud Music Sample

  11. Pandereta • They come in 3 different sizes • Each size plays a different role (different sounds/beat) • Panderetas resemble tambourines but without the cymbals. • They are handheld drums with animal skins stretched over them. • They can also be called panderos. Pandereta
