Program Overview • Students from Korean Christian family learn English through total language immersion • Students participate in regular Canadian Christian school curriculum • Students stay in a classmate’s home to experience life with a North American Christian family • HANWOOD INC.
History of the Program • Hanwood started the program in Canada in 2003 • Twelve Manitoba Public School Divisions have hosted 600 students • Eleven Manitoba Christian Schools have participated in the program • Calgary Board of Education have participated in the program since 2005 • HANWOOD INC.
Program Details • Hanwood places students in Christian schools with same age and gender classmates • Korean students live with Canadian students’ home • Eligible students are 10-14 years, in Grades 4-8 • Students must have taken extra English classes and are recommended by their English teachers in Korea • HANWOOD INC.
Program Sessions • Short-Term: Students stay for approximately 2 -3 months and participate in one of the following sessions: • Fall (starts beginning of September) • Winter (starts beginning of January) • Long-Term: Students stay for full school year: • From early September to June • HANWOOD INC.
A Profile of Korean Participants • South Korea, with a population of 48 million, is about the same size as the Lake Superior • Most students are from Seoul, capital city of 10 million • Students eligible for the Hanwood program take additional private classes, several times a week • Students are academically focused and above average in Math and Computer Science • HANWOOD INC.

Benefits of Program • For Classmates and Host Families • Contribute to school improving budget • Learn about Korean culture, customs and values • Create lasting friendships and links to Korea • Families are compensated for expenses • Korean students are typically high achievers and classmates are motivated to study harder • Classmates learn responsibility, caring for their guests • HANWOOD INC.
Roles and Responsibilities • Hanwood will • recruit and interview Korean students • pay fees to participating schools and host families • organize the program with Korean students, schools and host families • provide support for students, schools and families • give host families resource materials and advice • HANWOOD INC.
Roles and Responsibilities • Schools will • promote the program to school staffs and parents • indentify and recruit potentially interested families • issue a Letter of Acceptance to Korean students • place only one Korean student into a regular class to reinforce language immersion • provide Certificate of the program and Anecdotal Reports for students • HANWOOD INC.
Roles and Responsibilities • Host Families will • act as a substitute family and include the student in all activities • foster and praise use of English • ensure child attends school and completes homework • provide accommodations and three meals daily • be present for student airport arrival and departure • HANWOOD INC.
