  1. SOLUTIONS FOR LOGISTICS AND MULTIMODAL TRANSPORT OPERATIONS THROUGH MOBILE LINKS Habil. Dr. Prof. Vytautas Paulauskas, Dr. Asoc. Prof. Birute Placiene, Dr. Asoc. Prof. Raimondas Barzdziukas, Dr. Valdas Lukauskas, Dr. Ricardas Maksimavicius Klaipeda University

  2. Introduction • Competition in the goods market tends to be very rigid and every production chain seeks to optimize costs; • Transportation cost optimization within a production chain or between some elements therefore is one of the main ways to decrease costs of the goods; • Multimodal operations and logistics are introduced as a potential factor to achieve optimization of transport costs and delivery time, increase safety of the goods during transportation

  3. Logistics Systems Based on Mobile Link Systems • Eastern Baltic ports are located within the area of big industry and population concentration and huge teritory; • Economics globalization tends to link industrial regions more and more and quick information is necessary; • Main cargo flows through Eastern Baltic ports have long range and different conditions, which request quick actions; • New conditions regarding transport costs, delivery time and cargo safety optimisation, based on logistics and mobile links possibilities.

  4. Multimodal operation schemes • Classical multimodal operation scheme (is subject to insure the cargo on its behalf); • Multimodal transportation on part of the production chain (matter is that in many cases is rather difficult to have one multimodal operator to handle the delivery from raw material to final products);

  5. Multimodal Operations and Logistics Based on Mobile Links • Multimodal operations are very often linked with sea and other transport means and request good coordination; • Large shipping companies, which operate ro-ro ferries in cooperation with truck or railway companies must find solutions in short time and in any place of decision maker; • Mobile links with special programs can assist find fast and correct solutions

  6. Multimodal transportation process schemes • Cooperation between transport and industrial companies; • Multimodal operator in cooperation maintained between transport companies; • Multimodal operation scheme in case of “middle company” system.

  7. Practical Multimodal Operation and Logistics Services Based On Mobile Links • Forwarding, transportation and distribution request coordination between multimodal operator partners; • Short sea shipping and sea motorways in multimodal operations as qiuck decisions; • New advanced technologies and solutions based on mobile links can increase cargo safety, reduce transport costs and delivery time.

  8. Conclusions1 • For traditional existing cargo new technologies and solutions are necessary; • Reduction of transport costs and delivery time are the main tasks of optimisation; • Multimodal transportation and logistics services based on mobile links can lead to decreasing of transport costs and time and increasing of cargo safety concurrently;

  9. Conclusions 2 New possibilities based on mobile links can assist to organize multimodal operation and logistics services in existing situation to reach main tasks. • Future belongs to optimization of transport processes, and as a most reliable, fastest and easiest ways to reach this is multimodal operation and logistics services based on mobile links. • Transport companies that are featured as main coordination elements in multimodal transportation can and should be the initiator of multimodal transportation process and new technologies.
