Historical Background I • 1810: Albrecht D. THAER is appointed to an associated professorship in Agriculture at the University • 1859: An autonomous Agricultural Institute is founded in Berlin • 1881: Founding of RoyalAgricultural College of Berlin • 1929: First academic study course in Horticultural Sciences in Germany is established • 1946: After the Second World War, courses resume in January in the heavily damaged buildings • 1951: The Agricultural Faculty is split into an eastern and a western part
Historical Background II • 1956: The eastern Faculty now comprises 27 institutes and three experimental farms • 1992: The eastern and the western Faculties are re-unified under the roof of Humboldt-Universität • 1994: Setting up a new faculty council, the Faculty of Agriculture and Horticulture of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin is established on 3 October • 1996: The existing seven institutes merge into four institutes • 2000: In October, the Faculty of Agriculture and Horticulture introduces a new study system, offering two Bachelor and seven Master courses • 2001: All Bachelor and Master courses are accredited as first courses of this kind in Germany.

Café FLORA SOFT • set up in 1994 as a comunity of interests • central meeting point for students • managed by a view non-paid students • non-alcoholic drinks and sweets in return for a donation • barbecues in the summer, film shows or parlour games in the • winter • members organise parties and events (first semester party, • christmas party, carnival, summer festivities) STUDENTS HOMEBASE
Scripts • This community of interests works on … • … collecting lecture scripts and examination papers • … replace new versions every semester • … keep them available for the students • students can borrow the scripts to copy them • more and more the scripts are offered in the internet STUDENTS LIFEBELT
Organic farming • this study group exists for five years • 17 active members at the moment • meating every two weeks • lectures or exchange of practice experiences • periodical seminars are organised • field trips to organic farms and research institutes STUDENTS ALTERNATIVE
Courtyard garden • students intiative to embellish the courtyard of the faculty • cleaning and cultivation of 50 m2 area • set up different beds with crops, flowers, herbs and • vegetables • it`s a place to relax and enjoy the sun … STUDENTS PARADISE
Globalisation and Agriculture • study group founded last semester • works on actual aspects of globalisation • (especialy agriculture) • pros and contras are discussed • explanation of terms and definitions • one conference has been organised so far STUDENTS EMOTIVE ISSUE
