Biology: The study of life What makes something a living thing? Canislupisfamiliaris.
Cells/Organization Cell-Smallest unit capable of all life functions • Unicellular- one cell ex. Bacteria • Multicellular- organism made of many cells
DNA/Heredity • Deoxyribonucleic acid- carries the code for all organisms
Reproduction Asexual reproduction- involves a single parent Sexual reproduction - involves 2 parents Is it essential for an individual to reproduce?
Grow and Develop Organisms growas they produce MORE CELLS Organisms develop as they mature into adult organisms
Obtain and use Energy/Metabolism Metabolism = the total of all chemical reactions in an organism Why do organisms need energy? How do organisms obtain energy? What reactions are going on in our body?
Energy Use/Metabolism • Autotrophs( plants) – use energy from the sun to make their own food “glucose” • Heterotrophs- ingest food for energy Where does all energy come from?
Respond to Stimulus Stimulus- anything that causes an organism to react • Light • Temperature • Odor • Sound • Pressure • Gravity • Heat • Water
Evolution/Adaptation • Evolution- Groups of Organisms will change over time in order to survive with changing environments • Adaptation- characteristics that improves organisms ability to survive and reproduce
Homeostasis Homeostasis- the ability of an organism to maintain its internal environment despite conditions in the external environment. Human body temperature is……… • if body temperature rises, you sweat. • if body temperature lowers, you shiver.
Limited Life Span Giant tortoise- life span = 150 years
"It's older than the great pyramids, older than Stonehenge” 4,770-year-old "Methuselah" bristle-cone pine. "When Christ walked the earth it was already 2,700 years old." California, USA
All Living things share these characteristics. 1. Made up of one or more cells2. Have DNA3. Can reproduce4. Grow and develop5. Obtain and use energy6. Respond to their environment 7. Can change over time(evolve)8. Maintain Stable Internal environment 9. Limited life span
