Summary • Causes of mental disorders can be both physical and mental. An organic disorder is a mental disorder that is considered physical, or caused because of something you did. An example of an organic disorder is Dementia. If a mental disorder is not physical, then it is classified under functional disorder. These can include inborn causes, early experiences, or current cases. Anyone can be affected by mental disorders. Slide #2

Aaron and Dementia • Aaron has always been the quiet and shy one. So, when he transferred schools, he thought this was the perfect opportunity to change and become that party person he always wanted to be. Weeks past and he is partying and making friends with the popular crowd. After going to party after party, Aaron starts drink more and doing more and more drugs. He thinks this is fun, but does he know what he is doing to himself? What the consequences are in the end? Slide #5
Aaron and Dementia • If Aaron keeps doing drugs and consuming alcohol, he can get a very serious organic mental disorder called Dementia. Dementia is a mental disorder where people have poor judgment, mental confusion, and memory loss. Aaron did not know what Dementia was or how to get it, so he partied on. After high school, alcohol and drugs became an obsession. He couldn’t stop. At age 37, he was diagnosed with Dementia. If he knew sooner about Dementia, he would’ve gave up drugs and alcohol. Functional disorders can be caused because of inborn cases, early experiences, or currant cases. They can even be a mixture of all three. Organic mental disorders are physical and caused by something someone did. Dementia is an organic disorder, where people are mentally confused, have poor judgment, and memory loss. Mental disorders can effect anyone, but you can help minimize it by not doing drugs and keeping your self healthy. Slide #7
