Perkins 2000 Series Engine • Previously Rolls-Royce • C4,C6,C8 Engines: Built 1952 - 1982 Approx. • Typical Engine Types: • Industrial: C6TFL, C8SFL, C8TCA & 4NFR • Automotive: E209L, E330, E400 & E230. • Typical Engine Build Numbers: • 806601R, 604001S, 401001A, C220H15 & C132F10. • Eagle: 2653F00A, 29L3S03D & 34L3S23C. • Please note:These numbers are only typical and many others exist. • The engine plate is fixed on the block, just above the starter.Gather • as much information as possible before contacting the Helpdesk at PDC.

  9. Perkins 2000 Series Engine Note: Left and right hand denotes which side Camshaft is when looking from the rear of the engine

  10. Service and Durability • Ease of maintenance • Minimal downtime • Low cost of ownership • World-wide support network • 400 hour standard service intervals

  11. Engine Performance • Controlled rapid combustion • Matched turbochargers - improving SFC - load acceptance • Mechanical governing tailored to meet market requirements

  12. Perkins 2000 Series Engine • Crankcase • Comprises of crank chamber and cylinder block • Cast as a single unit in high grade iron • Rigidity is ensured by extending the crank chamber well below the centreline of the crank • Additional stiffness is provided by 6 lateral bolts through some of the main bearing caps

  13. Perkins 2000 Series Engine Crankshaft • The crankshaft is forged in chrome-molybdenum steel. • Dynamically balanced. • All bearing surfaces are nitride hardened. • Regrinding of the crank is permissible in 4 stages: 0.010”, 0.020”, 0.030” and 0.040”.

  14. Perkins 2000 Series Engine Main Bearings • Steel backed, lead bronze shells with a lead/indium overlay. • All front, centre & rear shells have oil grooves and oil inlet holes top & bottom. • Intermediate shells have grooves and holes in the top only. • Sizes: standard, -0.10”, -0.020”, -0.030” & -0.040”.

  15. Perkins 2000 Series Engine Pistons • Cast in low expansion aluminium alloy. • 3 piston ring grooves • Combustion chamber is ‘Hard Anodised’ to thermally insulate edge of chamber. • Top ring groove has cast iron insert • Valve recess areas are machined into piston crown

  16. Perkins 2000 Series Engine Pistons • High & low compression diesel engine pistons. • Shallow bowl gas engine pistons. • Pistons are marked ‘FRONT’ and also marked with compression ratio.

  17. Perkins 2000 Series Engine Connecting Rods • Con-rods are chrome-molybdenum steel forging • Machined to size and drilled longitudinally for pressure lubrication of the small end. • Small end is wedge shaped to reduce pressure loading on small end and gudgeon pin bosses. • 7 different weights, each by 4oz. Denoted by letters Y,Z,A,B,C,D,E. • Each letter split into 4 x 1 oz divisions. Denoted by numbers 1-4. • All con-rod replacement must be done by the same weight.

  18. Perkins 2000 Series Engine • Cylinder liners • Manufactured from centrifugally cast iron and then induction hardened • Wet liners. • Pre-finished. Silicon-Carbide honed. • 3 Viton seals at bottom of liner. (Leak free sealing)

  19. Perkins 2000 Series Engine Liner Liner Seals. • Seals have an elliptical profile. • Make sure seal is correctly fitted and not twisted. • Do not allow grease to get behind seal as this creates hydraulic pressure on liner fitment. • Seals are made of Viton. Seal Grease

  20. Perkins 2000 Series Engine Cylinder Heads • 2 heads per engine • 2 valves per cylinder • Valve seat inserts cryogenically fitted • Screw in steel injector sleeves • Helical ports to promote swirl

  21. Perkins 2000 Series Engine Fuel Injection Pump Pressure relief valve Stop Lever Delivery Valves Throttle Lever Pump Identification Plate Governor Identification Plate Timing Gate Lift Pump Hand Priming Pump

  22. Perkins 2000 Series Engine Two Stage Turbocharging • Used on TTAG engines • One turbo feeds into another. • Compressed air from first turbo is further compressed by the second. • Atmospheric pressure = 1 bar Stage 1: Compression X2 = 2 bar Stage 2: Compression X3 = 6 bar 1 bar = 0.1 MPa

  23. Perkins 2000 Series Engine

  24. Perkins 2000 Series Engine Main differences between Gas & Diesel Engines • Cylinder Heads Different Exhaust valve and seat Valve angles: DieselGas Inlet: 300 300 Exhaust: 450 300 • 14 mm spark plug tube instead of injector provision

  25. Perkins 2000 Series Engine Main differences between Gas & Diesel engines • Pistons Simple cavity topped piston. Lower compression ratio. Gas: 12 : 1 Diesel: 15.9 : 1 & 15 : 1

  26. Perkins 2000 Series Engine Main differences between Gas and Diesel Engines • Bearings When gas engines use sour gasses as a fuel (ie. land fill sites), the gas contains Hydrogen Sulphide. This attacks bronze based bearings so gas engines use an Aluminium Alloy in their bearing construction.

  27. 2000 Series Summary • The Perkins 2000 Series engine is a well proven 6 cylinder diesel engine • Designed for compact and dependable power solutions • Suitable for Gen Set and Industrial Applications.
