  1. Sociology • SSSocFR1: Students will explain the origins of sociology and the sociological perspective, and how sociology relates to the other social sciences.

  3. Sociology Definition - The systematic study of human society and social interaction.

  4. A society is a large social grouping that shares the same geographical territory and is subject to the same political authority and dominant cultural expectations.

  5. Sociological Imagination • The ability to see the relationship between individual experiences and the larger society. Private v. Public Issues

  6. Sociological Perspective • Sociology studies human social behavior. It assumes a group, rather than an individual perspective. Sociologists look for the patterns in social relationships. Individuals can benefit by using their sociological imaginations to look at events in their personal lives.

Origins of Sociology • Sociology is a young science. • It started with the writings of European scholars like Auguste Comte, Harriet Martineau, Herbert Spencer, Karl Marx, Emile Durkheim, and Max Weber. • Jane Adams and W.E.B. DuBoise helped focus America’s attention on social issues. • After WWII, America takes the lead in developing the field of Sociology.

  12. The Social Sciences • Social Science is a branch of learning that deals with human society. It has a number of disciplines: • Anthropology • Psychology • Economics • Political Science • History

  13. SSSocFR1(d) • Identify careers where sociological knowledge is applicable.

  14. Sociology Careers • Social Services work (working with youth and elderly) • Community Work (President Obama) • Correctional Work - officers • Business (advertising, research, Insurance, real estate, sales, training) • Government Services • Teaching

  15. Assessment • 1) Define sociology. • 2) Explain the significance of patterns for Sociologists. • Read “The McDonaldization of Higher Education” on page 20. Then answer the following questions: • 1. Do you think the benfits of the ‘McUniversity” outweigh the disadvantages? Why or Why not? • 2What other industries or professions are being effected by McDonaldization? Give examples. • ON page 22 in your book, write the questions and answers under Section 2 Assessment, to include the Critical Thinking question (you do not have to write the question to the critical thinking question).
