Homework 3 Due 7/28/2011
Using PropBank 1 • Most languages have transitivity alternations i.e. verb forms that take a different number of arguments in different contexts e.g. `open’. In some languages, this change is accompanied by morphological changes in the verb stem e.g. Hindi-Urdu `khul’/`khol’ (open). Discuss how you could use PropBank to extract the Transitivity Alternations in a given language.
Using PropBank 2 • PropBanks are typically built upon existing syntactic treebanks because this simplifies the annotation task. However, this relies upon treebank constituents being the same as PropBank `constituents’. Discuss what issues (challenges/advantages) would come up if you decided to PropBank as the first step (before syntactic treebanking)?
