Infection • Causes onchocerciasis (or river blindness) • Caused from the bacterium Wolbachia which has an endosymbiotic relationship • Second leading cause of blindness • 18 million suffer from the disease • Can cause blindness
Diagnosis • Most effective way to diagnose this infection is by taking a skin sample and checking for larvae.
Treatment • Ivermectin • Can be used to prevent the infection • Corticosteroids may help with allergic reactions • Doxycycline also can help kill microfilaria but it is currently being tested.
Prevention and Control • Stopping black flies from biting humans by using protective netting • Treat local lakes and rivers with insectices
