  1. “Heal The Earth”: Solid Waste Managment Theme: Sanitation and Sensitization

  2. Content • Introduction of Solid Waste. • Classification of Waste. • Introduction of Allotted area • Reasons for waste management in locality • Ways to reduce • Role of Society • Role of concened Civic Authority • Role of Technology • Role of IPS • Conclusion

  3. Introduction of Solid Waste “substances or objects which are disposed of or are intended to be disposed of or are required to be disposed of by the provisions of the law” Disposal means “any operation which may lead to resource recovery, recycling, reclamation, direct re-use or alternative uses (Annex IVB of the Basel convention)”

  4. Classification of waste

  5. Area allotted for study NyayKhand

  6. Reasons for mismanagement of waste disposal in the locality • Lack of planning for waste management while planning townships • Lack of proper institutional set up for waste management, planning and designing in urban local bodies • Lack of technically trained manpower • Lack of community involvement • Lack of expertise and exposure to city waste management using modern techniques / best practices • Lack of awareness creation mechanism • Lack of Management Information Systems • Lack of funds with MCDs • Indifferent attitude of MCDs to levy user charges and sustainability

  7. Suggestions to reduce the amount of solid waste generated. Residents to be organized into small groups to carry out the following: • Construction of backyard compost pit. • Construction of storage bins where recyclable and reusable materials are stored by each household. • Construction of storage centers where recyclable and reusable materials collected by the street sweepers are stored prior to selling to junk dealers. • Maintenance of cleanliness in yards and streets. • Greening of their respective areas. • Encouraging others to join.

  8. Reduction is better than disposal • Source reduction, or preventing waste in the first place, is a better option than disposal. • Personal/consumer behavior: • Use fewer items • Buy less-packaged and longer-lived goods • Reuse items • Manufacturer behavior: • Make goods with less packaging • Make longer-lived goods • Adopt more-efficient production methods

  9. Reuse • Reusing items is a powerful way to reduce one’s waste. • There are simple ways to do this: • Buy used clothing, and donate used clothing • Bring your own cloth bags to grocery stores • Bring your own coffee mug to coffee shops

  10. Recycling Consists of three steps

  11. Role of Society • To minimize waste. • Materials should be recycled. • Waste segregation at source. • Materials to be purchased should have long expiry date. • Eco-friendly processing of waste. • Vermi composting to generate manure

  12. Municipal Solid Waste Paper is the biggest component of municipal solid waste

  13. Role of concerned civic authority. • Outsourcing of all activities under Solid Waste Management Services recommended by 12th Finance Commission for using grants. • MCDs to concentrate on segregation of waste at source. • Waste processing like composting, bio-methanation should be done through public-private partnerships/ private sector. • Final disposal viz. sanitary land filling to be done under public private partnerships / private sector. • Bio-medical waste to be managed by Central Bio-Medical Waste Management Facilities.

  14. Role of technology in management of solid waste. Bio- Energy Production: Conversion of biogas into natural gas of high quality. Electricity and heat utilisation with increasing energy efficiency in the plants. Bio-gas Plant Bio-gas utilization

  15. Integrated Waste Management System waste yes secondary raw material can be avoided no recycling or energy recovery can be recovered yes no can be landfilled landfill yes thermal treatment energy no

  16. Role of I.P.S • We are using envelopes without cellophane windows • Some students replaced ball point or gel pens by fountain pens. • Models were made using waste papers. • We followed green rules by segregating waste at source. a). Yellow bin(bio-degradable/recyclable)- dry paper waste only. b). Green bins(bio-degradable/perishable)- pencil shaving, food peels, wet tissue paper, soiled –paper plates. c). Blue bins(non bio-degradable)-polythenes,usedpens,waste plastic objects. d). Landfilling by making a compost pit. • Teachers use their own cups instead of paper cups for drinking tea. • We recycle used paper by getting printouts on it.

  17. Conclusion • By this we can conclude that Solid Waste generated in our area is very hazardous and causes various types of pollution and also health diseases and our earth is getting depleted day by day. • We should take some initiatives to manage the waste and follow three R’s (Reuse, Reduce, & Recycle). • Let us join hands together and do some steps to save our mother Earth.

  18. “ It is appreciable to organize a seminar on sanitation but nothing beats bending down & picking up a chocolate wrapper ” JAI SWACHHTA
