Motivation Activities Purpose: To understand your motivations and the motivations of others for participating in activities.
Goal OrientationsThere are 2 perspectives of success (what we are motivated by). • 1.Task-oriented – focussing on learning new skills and on comparing performance with personal standards. • E.g. A task oriented golf player might be thinking ‘My last drive swung to the left. I’ll change my grip to send my drive straight’.
Goal Orientations… • 2.Ego-oriented – focusing on defeating others and comparing one’s performance against that of other people. • E.g. An ego-oriented golf player might be thinking ‘My partner’s drive was 180metres. This time my drive will be 200metres.
Goal Orientations… • Usually a person with a mix of orientations. • Sports Psychologists believe that a high task orientation in combination with either high or low ego orientation is good for motivation. • A strong focus on an ego orientation with a low task orientation is viewed as undesirable.
Attributes The reasons people provide for success or failure • Think of a successful performance you’ve had in a sport. • Why were you successful? • What was the main reason for your success? • Now think of poor or unsuccessful performance in that sport. • Why were you unsuccessful? • What was the main reason for your lack of success?
The reasons you may be successful/unsuccessful are from the following: • Luck - weather, referee etc… • Ability - better player, your team was not very strong • Effort • Task difficulty - opponents were more experienced, you had a good grasp of the tactics.
