Organization Rules • Class activities arrangements: • Where you want them to place HW, Projects, Exam, (DropBox, Hand it to you, send as an attachments, etc.) • Room arrangements: • Change design of the classroom Setting: • Group discussion • Team work – individual assignments • Lecture
Expectations Rules • Set rules with Do rather than Don’t • Set example for your HW/Project • Be clear and specific • In positive manner: ex; to be fair… • Be open for students suggestion to add to your set of rules (reasonable Vs possible) • Set rule agreements:
Rule Agreements Form Date: _____________ Student Name: __________ Class: __________ Instructor: ___________ I _____, have read and understood the rules for Mr./Mrs. ____ BIS150, class rules. Student’s signature: _______
Rule Agreements Instead of “Rule Agreements” form – Add to your syllabus the following title: “Policy & Expectations” State each rule in one individual paragraph
Rewards & Punishments • Use kind words • Treat them with respect • Motivation word: • I know this is a challenging assignment but I know you can handle it… • Use positive word about them for small accomplishment • Listen to them and give them individual attention
Rewards & Punishments • Plan rewards: • Plan ahead for some rewards • Be clear: I want to give this opportunity… • NO private reward (that cause sending the wrong signal) • NOT too many rewards (that will reduce the effectiveness of rewards • Surprise rewards (works as well)
Rewards & Punishments • Punishments • In positive manner: • Never punish student in front others – talk to them in private: • your attitude was inappropriate today but I did not want to discuss this in front of class.. • You are always late what could be an issue • You are leaving in the middle of lecture… what seems to be…
Be Consistence • Stay with your expectations rules • If you have to change any of your policy or expectations then be clear – have reason & have it announced: additional printout page – post it in – • EX: for the following reason I will now accepting your…
Communications • Set: Rules for Communications • You want to see you.. Send you e-mail.. • Communications is the key to most of the problems • Start your conversation with positive
Some Tips • Keep the “Rules” short.. • Keep your routine • Turn your assignment at the beginning • Start your class on time (review last class materials, quiz, or outline of today lecture etc.) • Stay calm when you talking to your student • Listen to them carefully • Make note or document: “on date he said…”
Some Tips • Have Plan B, C, (unexpected situation – being able to conduct your class!!) • Be role model: • Be on time • Keep your promises • Talk to them with respect • Talk about school & other instructor with respect • Follow the school policy • Be prepared for your class
Some Tips • Give an opportunity for communications time: • Be a few minutes early for your class • Stay a few minutes after your class • Be excited about!!! • Show them that you care!!!
I start each class with five minutes of talking about.. Ex; news, sport, current events, etc. • I use index card in the first day of the class and have each student write: name, phone, - then I use the card for taking attendance and some note about them • Write on the board the class agenda activities for that day • When student are scared of your subject, distract them by saying something that – fun - silly humor
Be excited about your discipline – show your passion about your profession • Be prepared – • After the first exam have your student complete the following sentence: “I could have done better on this exam if _____ • Call your students by their name frequently • Have students exchange phone numbers
Assign group activities and assign specific roles (team leader) • Create energy, move around, show enthusiasm • Incorporate videos, music or others • Use short-term case study • Break the lecture into meaningful short segment • Establish a collection of cartoons and use them to make a point
From time to time videotape yourself as you lecture and see yourself as others see you • Ask student, at the end of the class, write about: “what part of the lecture/learning activity was fuzzy” • Establish the practice of having students give short oral summaries of …. That is related to the study • Let students teach each other • Ask open-ended questions to motivate thoughtful answers
Question, Pause, call name for answer – • After the student answer the question – ask other student if they agree why - why not • Ask question that has neither right nor wrong answers • Make sure to give feedback that is informative and explicit “good” is not enough • Start feedback with something positive - • Do not ignore a wrong answer
