  2. PROPOSAL • Block Schedule for Howard High School/Middle School • Run an Orange/Black (A/B) plan where classes meet for 90 minute blocks on alternating days

Hands on learning Students are more involved in educational experience More time on task Less down time (hallways) Learning is more in depth Varied teaching methods Higher test scores Absences (difficult to get work made up) Overuse of lecture Lack of staff training Advantages/Disadvantages of Block Scheduling

  4. Gaining Support • School Visits • Presentations on block scheduling by users • Parent/Community meetings • Assemblies done by students using block scheduling • Distribute data and research • School Board approval • Staff Development

  5. Plan of Action • Do research and gather data • Hold informational meetings • Do school visits • Adopt a plan and set time lines • Implementation plan • In Services • Begin using block scheduling in the Fall • Evaluation of plan

  6. Marketing Plan • Informational meetings to keep the community as informed as possible • Send letters home to parent to keep them up to date on the plan • Put information in the newspaper

  7. Summary • Involve parents, community members, staff, and students • Show the benefits-how is this going to improve test scores! • Assist with the change • Be organized and have more than enough information • Be flexible and accept change • Offer assistance in planning and teaching
