Pass the paper. • Check MLA format • 12 pt. TIMES New Roman, double-spaced • MLA heading • MLA page numbering- also TIMES • 1” margins • Centered title
Pass the paper. • Read the introduction and check for the following organization: • Attention grabber • Background information • Block quotation • Thesis statement
Pass the paper. • Read the introduction. • Check for smooth transitions between the parts of the intro. • Write “add transition” where any ideas “jump” from one to the next.
Pass the paper. • Read the introduction. • Check for “be” verbs and casual language– put an X over any of the following: • I/ you/ we/ us/ yours/ me/ my/ mine • Am, is, are, was, were, be, being, been • Clichés/ idioms/ too casual language • Vague language such as the word “things” or “stuff”
Pass the paper. • Locate the thesis statement and check for the FIRST trait listed in the thesis statement. • Then check the topic sentence of Body Paragraph #1– it should have that trait in it. • If the thesis is NOT in order and the first trait is not actually FIRST, please tell them to reorder the list of traits in the thesis statement.
Same person. • Read Body Paragraph #1 and check for the following order: • Topic sentence • Quote #1 • Commentary (at least 2 sentences) • Quote #2 • Commentary (at least 2 sentences) • Quote #3 • Commentary (at least 2 sentences) • Concluding sentence
Pass the paper. • Body Paragraph #1- check the topic sentence • It should mention key words from the THEME in the THESIS. Circle these. • It should mention a specific Gothic trait from the THESIS. Circle this. • It should mention a specific AUTHOR and TITLE of a piece– circle this. • Make sure the title is formatted properly– essays/ poems/ short stories should be in quotation marks; novels should be italicized
Pass the paper. • Body Paragraph #1– check the quotations. • Each quote should be BLENDED with TCS. • Transition • Context • Speaker • The TCS must come BEFORE the quote! • C = PLOT/ not a chapter number or page number • Label the TCS of EACH quote! If any part is missing, tell them to add it in.
Pass the paper. • Body Paragraph #1– quotations. • Check that each quote is blended properly– make sure they are NOT fragments or run-on sentences • Make sure that they haven’t switched pronouns from third person he/she to first person I in the quote • Also, make sure they have included an MLA internal citation for each quote that comes AFTER the quotation marks but BEFORE the period. • Sentence, “quote” (citation).
Pass the paper. • Body paragraph #1– commentary • Check that each quotation has AT LEAST TWO SENTENCES after it to explain it!! • Make sure that the commentary CONNECTS BACK TO THE THEME IDEAS! Each commentary should explain HOW the quote SHOWS the theme!
Pass the paper. • Body Paragraph #1– Concluding sentence. • Make sure the paragraph has a concluding sentence that rephrases the TOPIC SENTENCE ideas, including the THEME • Make sure this sentence uses DIFFERENT WORDS than the THESIS and TOPIC SENTENCE
Pass the paper. • Body Paragraph #1– editing. • Read the paragraph and circle any grammar/ spelling errors that you see. • Cross out any “be” verbs and any cases of first or second person pronouns (quotes excluded).
Give back to the owner. HW: Make revisions as needed. Also, add Body Paragraph #2 by Tuesday! Bring a new, updated draft for peer revision.
