  2. Pass the essay. • Read the introduction and highlight the thesis. • Highlight word glue in topic sentences of body paragraph #5 and onwards. • If word glue is missing, please instruct them to add it.

  3. Pass the essay. • Highlight all quotes in paragraph #5 and onwards. • Label the TCS for EACH ONE!! • Transition • Context • Speaker • Please tell the writer to add this where it is missing.

  4. Pass the essay. • Read the 5th + body paragraph(s) and label the parts of the paragraph in the margin. Make them a note to add if they are missing one of the following: • Topic sentence • Quote #1 • Commentary/ 2 sentences minimum • Quote #2 • Commentary/ 2 sentences minimum • Concluding sentence

  5. Pass the essay. • Read the introduction AND the conclusion. • Label the three parts of the conclusion: • Rephrase the thesis • Transition • Broad/ universal statement • Make a note if they are missing any of these parts.

  6. Pass the essay. • Read through the essay from 5th paragraph onwards and circle any verbs (outside of quotes) that slip into past tense. • Circle any contractions. Formal writing cannot have any of these. The student needs to write out the two words: • Isn’t (is not) • Can’t (cannot) • Shouldn’t (should not)

  7. Pass the essay. • Read for passive voice verbs and circle any you find. These will need to be changed into active voice verbs: • The ball was given to the boy by the player. vs. • The player gave the boy the ball. • Circle “be” verbs in the essay. These will need to be edited out and changed into ACTION VERBS: • Am • Is • Are • Was • Were • Be • Being • Been

  8. Pass the essay. • Check MLA format • MLA heading • MLA page numbers- INCLUDING WORKS CITED PAGE • 1” margins • 12 pt. font Times New Roman

  9. Same person. • Check the MLA Works Cited page • No heading • MLA page number (last name plus number) • Centered title should be Works Cited • Sources listed in alphabetical order acc. to first word of entry • Double-spaced/ 12 pt. font Times/ handing indentations • Check that source info. look mostly correct

  10. Pass the essay back to the owner. • Look over marks by your peers.
