The Residents WELCOME TO THEIR WORLD
Anja died without pain relief, oxygen and family. The state’s elderly home is the dumping grounds for the homeless and the unwanted.
Despite being blind, double amputee, and with no help with personal needs,Mara still manages a smile.
46 year old Melisa lives in utter confusion amongst the elderly
Health and Safety Yes, you have guessed, there is no such thing as health and safety standards. They are too poor for standards.
Dilapidated wheel chairs get stuck in holes in worn down linoleum and chunks of wood is missing from wooden floors, turning a stroll into a hazardous obstacle course. Corridor Bedroom
Patients eat from tin plates. Their daily allowance for food is €3.00. Their diet consists of stale bread dunked in watery soup, speckled with particles of rice.
With plumbing that no longer functions, having a bath or a shower is impossible. Buckets of water are used to wash the elderly.
Personal possession equals1 night dress, 1 hair comb, 1 bar of soap
Statement from the State’s Home Director “So many people have come, looked around, made promises and they were never seen again.” Janja Juric
Confey Student’s Message “We are going out to bring smiles to their faces, to hold their hands, to wash their feet in scented water, to put brand new bed linen beneath their wounds and to dress them in personal bed wear that we unpack from wrappers in their presence.” Transition Year Students
The Challenges Ahead for Confey Students While one crew of students is attending to patient’s personal needs, another crew will be tearing 40 year old tiles off bathroom walls and floors, and with the professional help of an Irish builder, they will be giving the residents a beautiful new bathroom with a walk in shower, suitable for double amputees. Paint brushes await the students to re-decorate their community rooms. They are assured that there is an endless supply of buckets of water, detergents and scrubbing materials to clean down walls, doors, windows and floors. The students have seven days of the most rewarding work imaginable ahead of them, and they are looking forward to every minute of the challenges ahead.
The Confey Student’s Question to You Can you help Us to help The Residents? Our aim is to make living conditions for the beautiful souls in the state home more bearable. For every Euro we raise, we hope you will be able to match it. Click me
