  1. Histology – study of tissues • Groups of cells similar in structure and function • The four types of tissues • Epithelial • Connective • Muscle • Nerve

  2. Epithelial Tissue • Cellularity – composed almost entirely of cells • Special contacts – form continuous sheets held together by tight junctions

  3. Epithelial Tissue • Supported by connective tissue • Avascular but innervated – contains no blood vessels but supplied by nerve fibers • Regenerative – rapidly replaces lost cells by cell division

  4. Classification of Epithelia by shape • Squamous, cuboidal, or columnar Figure 4.1b

  5. Classification of Epithelia by layers • Simple or stratified Figure 4.1a

  6. Epithelia: Simple Squamous #1

  7. Epithelia: Simple Cuboidal (not in lab)

  8. Epithelia: Simple Columnar #2

  9. Epithelia: Pseudostratified Columnar #3

  10. Epithelia: Transitional • Several cell layers, basal cells are cuboidal, surface cells are dome shaped • Stretches to permit the distension of the urinary bladder • Lines the urinary bladder, ureters, and part of the urethra

  11. Epithelia: Transitional (draw on lab)
