CLIMATE CHANGE/ GLOBAL WARMING Before discussing what climate change is all about ,there is need for us to identify the difference between weather and climate. WHAT IS WEATHER AND CLIMATE ? • The difference between weather and climate is the time. • Weather is the conditions of the atmosphere over a short period of time usually from minutes to a year, and climate is how the atmosphere "behaves" over relatively long periods of time usually about 30 years. • In short, climate is the description of the long-term pattern of weather in a particular area.
Why Study Climate? • The study of climate and how it changes is important, because it affects people around the world. • Rising global temperatures are expected to raise sea levels, and change precipitation and other local climate conditions. • Changing regional climate could alter forests, crop yields, and water supplies. • It also affects human health, animals, and many types of ecosystems. Deserts may expand into existing rangelands, and features of some of our National Parks and National Forests may be permanently altered.
CLIMATE CHANGE/GLOBAL WARMING Is it happening ?
WHAT IS CLIMATE CHANGE? • Climate change can be described as changes in long-term averages of daily weather. Today, children always hear stories from their parents and grandparents about how snow was always piled up to their waists as they trudged off to school. • Children today in most areas of the country haven't experienced those kinds of dreadful snow-packed winters, except for the Northeastern U.S. in January 2005. • The change in recent winter snows indicate that the climate has changed since their parents were young. • This can be defined as the measurable increase in the average earth atmosphere, ocean and land masses, • scientists believe the earth is currently facing a period of rapid warming brought on by rising levels of heat-trapping gases, known as green house gases in the atmosphere. This weakens the ozone layer.
CAUSES OF CLIMATE CHANGE • Global warming • Burning of waste • The Greenhouse Effect • Earth’s temperature
EVIDENCE OF CLIMATE CHANGE • Climate change: how do we know? The following graphs are the evidences of climate change in the world.
This graph provides evidence that atmospheric CO2 has increased since the Industrial Revolution.
From the graph, you will notice that due to the increase in the rate of industrialization, the carbon dioxide level has also increased. This therefore affects the ozone layer which also has adverse effect on the climate , thereby leading to climate change.
