So Moses is commanded to tell the descendants of Jacob(Yisreal) to put a tassel on their garments. Who are these descendants ? Genesis 48:3 And Jacob said to Joseph, El Shaddai appeared to me in Luz in the land of Canaan and blessed me, 4 and said to me, Behold, I will make you fruitful and will multiply you, and will give you a multitude of peoples. And I will give this land to your seed after you as a continual possession. 5 And now your two sons, those born to you in the land of Egypt before my coming to you in Egypt, are mine, Ephraim and Manasseh, like Reuben and Simeon, even they shall be mine. 6 And your offspring which you father after them, they shall be yours. According to the name of their brothers they shall be called in their inheritance.
Genesis 49:3 Reuben, you are my first-born, my strength and the first-fruit of my power; excellence of dignity and excellence of might. 4 Like boiling water you shall not excel, for you went up to the bed of your father; then you defiled it; he went up to my couch. 5 Simeon and Levi, brothers; their weapons are instruments of violence. 6 Let not my soul come into their counsel; let not my spirit be joined to their company. For in their anger they killed a man; and in self-will they lamed an ox. 7 Cursed be their anger, for it was fierce; and their wrath, for it was cruel. I will divide them in Jacob, and I will scatter them in Israel. 8 Judah, may your brothers praise you, your hand be on the neck of your enemies. May the sons of your father bow themselves to you. (Zech 12:6) 9 Judah is a lion's whelp. My son, you have risen up from the prey; he stoops, he crouches like a lion; and like a lioness, who can rouse him? (Rev 5:5) 10 The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor the lawmaker from between his feet, until He comes to whom it belongs (Shiloh), and the obedience of the people to him. 11 Binding his foal to the vine, and his donkey 's colt to the choice vine, he washes his clothing in wine, and his covering in the blood of grapes. 12 His eyes shall be dark from wine and his teeth white from milk. prey, and at evening he divides the spoil. 28 All these were the tribes of Israel, two and ten.
Genesis 49:13Zebulun shall live at the seashore, and he shall be a haven of ships, even his border beside Sidon. 14Issacharis a strong donkey, crouching between the sheepfolds. 15 And he saw a resting place that it was good, and that the land was pleasant. And he bowed his neck to bear, and became a tribute slave. 16Dan shall judge his people, as one of the tribes of Israel. 17 Let Dan be a serpent on the way, a horned snake on the path that bites the horses' heels, and its rider falls backward. (Amos 9:3) 18 I have waited for your Y'shua*(salvation), O YAHWEH. 19Gad, an army shall attack him, and he shall overcome on their heel. 20 Out of Asher his bread shall be fat, and he shall give a king's delicacies. 21Naphtaliis a deer let loose giving one beautiful answers. 22Josephis a fruitful son, a fruitful son by a spring; his daughters run over a wall. 23 And the masters of arrows harass him, and shoot, and an archer lurks for him. 24 His bow abides in strength, and the hands of his arms are made agile by the hands of the Mighty One of Jacob, from the Shepherd, the Rock of Israel. 25 From the El of your father, may He help you. And may the Almighty bless you with blessings of Heaven from above, blessings of the deep that lies beneath, blessings of the breasts and womb. 26 The blessings of your father are above the blessings of my offspring, to the limit of everlasting hills; may they be for the head of Joseph and for the crown of the one separated of his brothers. 27Benjaminis a wolf that tears. In the morning he devours the prey, and at evening he divides the spoil.
So in these two chapters we see the sons of Jacob(Yisreal) are named and given blessings. They are Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Zebulun, Issachar, Dan, Gad, Asher, Naphtali, Joseph, and Benjamin. These men and their families were/are the children of Yisrael. Of all of these Juda and Joseph each got special blessings. Juda was foretold that the Messiah would come from him as ruler of all of Yisrael as a nation. Joseph was given a double portion blessing because his two sons were counted as sons of Jacob and each given an inheritance. Manasseh and Ephraim each had their own tribe among the twelve tribes of the Hebrews Joshua 14:4 For the children of Joseph were two tribes, Manasseh and Ephraim: therefore they gave no part unto the Levites in the land, save cities to dwell in, with their suburbs for their cattle and for their substance. Numbers 3:12 And I, behold, I have taken the Levites from among the children of Israel instead of all the firstborn that opens the womb among the children of Israel: therefore the Levites shall be mine; Numbers 18:23 But the Levites shall do the service of the tabernacle of the congregation, and they shall bear their iniquity: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations, that among the children of Israel they have no inheritance. . Ephraim was also told “his seed shall become the fullness of the nations.” This came true when the ten northern tribes were dispersed among the world in exile. They literally became part of all the other nations of the world. They lost their identity and were hidden among the gentiles. Isaiah 11:12 And he shall set up an explicit sign for the nations, and shall assemble the outcasts of Yisreal, and gather together the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth. Isaiah 27:12 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the LORD shall beat off from the channel of the river unto the stream of Egypt, and all of you shall be gathered one by one, O all of you children of Yisreal. Isaiah 43:5 Fear not: for I am with you: I will bring your seed from the east, and gather you from the west; Isaiah 56:8 The Lord GOD, which gathers the outcasts of Yisreal says, Yet will I gather others to him, beside those that are gathered unto him. Isaiah 66:18 For I know their works and their thoughts: it shall come, that I will gather all nations and tongues; and they shall come, and see my glory. Jeremiah 3:17 At that time they shall call Jerusalem the throne of the LORD; and all the nations shall be gathered unto it, to the name of the LORD, to Jerusalem: neither shall they walk any more after the imagination of their evil heart.
Jeremiah 23:3 And I will gather the remnant of my flock out of all countries where I have driven them, and will bring them again to their folds; and they shall be fruitful and increase. Jeremiah 31:8 Behold, I will bring them from the north country, and gather them from the coasts of the earth, and with them the blind and the lame, the woman with child and her that labors with child together: a great company shall return thither. Jeremiah 31:10 Hear the word of the LORD, O all of you nations, and declare it in the isles far off, and say, He that scattered Yisreal will gather him, and keep him, as a shepherd does his flock. Ezekiel 11:17 Therefore say, Thus says the Lord GOD; I will even gather you from the people, and assemble you out of the countries where all of you have been scattered, and I will give you the land of Yisreal. Ezekiel 20:34 And I will bring you out from the people, and will gather you out of the countries wherein all of you are scattered, with a mighty hand, and with a stretched out arm, and with fury poured out. Ezekiel 28:25 Thus says the Lord GOD; When I shall have gathered the house of Yisreal from the people among whom they are scattered, and shall be sanctified in them in the sight of the heathen, then shall they dwell in their land that I have given to my servant Jacob. Matthew 15:24 But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Yisreal. Matthew 8:11 And I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven. Acts 3:25 All of you are the children of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying unto Abraham, And in your seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed. Romans 4:16 Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all, 17 (As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations,) before him whom he believed, even God, who quickens the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were. 18 Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations, according to that which was spoken, So shall thy seed be. Galatians 3:7 Know all of you therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham. Galatians 3:29 And if all of you be Christ's, then are all of you Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.
So all who have faith in the Messiah, are the seed of Abraham, and heirs according to the promise, and part of Yisrael through Ephraim. If this is so, then do not we who are of this group, become part of the commandments given to the children of Yisrael. Not for salvation but for obedience in faith just like Abraham. Genesis 26:5 Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws. I believe we, as followers of the Messiah, are by obligation of faith, supposed to keep the commandments, all that we can, as best we can . Matthew 5:19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 19:17 And he said unto him, Why call you me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if you will enter into life, keep the commandments. John 14:15 If all of you love me, keep my commandments. John 15:10 If all of you keep my commandments, all of you shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love. Romans 3:31 Do we then make void the commandments through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the commandments. Romans 10:4 For Christ is the goal5056of the commandments for righteousness to every one that believes. I Corinthians 7:19 Circumcision is nothing, and uncircumcision is nothing, but the keeping of the commandments of God. I Thessalonians 4:2 For all of you know what commandments we gave you by the Lord Jesus. I John 2:3 And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. I John 2:4 He that says, I know him, and keeps not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. I John 5:2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments. Revelation of John 14:12 Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus. Revelation of John 22:14 Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city. Strong’s Greek #5056teloVtelostel'-os from a primary tello (to set out for a definite point or goal); properly, the point aimed at as a limit, i.e. (by implication) the conclusion of an act or state (termination (literally, figuratively or indefinitely), result (immediate, ultimate or prophetic), purpose); specially, an impost or levy (as paid):--+ continual, custom, end(-ing), finally, uttermost. Compare foroV - phoros5411.
Those keeping the commandments are showing their love for the Messiah and the Father. It shows that we know him, are patient, and blessed. And we have a right to the tree of life and can enter the city. This last part is very interesting because the new Jerusalem has twelve gates. Each with the name of a tribe of Yisrael. If you want to enter in through a gate you need to be part of a tribe. Revelations Chapter 21 1 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth passed away, and the sea no longer is. 2 And I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of Heaven from YAHWEH, having been prepared as a bride, having been adorned for her Husband. 3 And I heard a great voice out of Heaven, saying, Behold, the tabernacle of YAHWEH is with men! And He will tabernacle with them, and they will be His people, and YAHWEH Himself will be with them as their Elohim. 4 And YAHWEH will wipe away every tear from their eyes. And death shall be no longer, nor mourning, nor wailing, nor will there be pain any more; for the former things have passed away. (1 Cor 15:54-57) 5 And the One sitting on the throne said, Behold! I make all things new. And He says to me, Write, because these Words are faithful and true. 6 And He said to me, It is done! I am the Aleph and the Tav, the Beginning and the Ending. To the one thirsting, I will freely give of the fountain of the Water of Life. (Rev 1:8, Is 44:6, 48:12) 7 The one overcoming will inherit all things, and I will be Elohim to him, and he will be the son to Me. 8 But for the cowardly and unbelieving, and those having become sinful, and to murderers, and fornicators, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and to all liars, their part will be in the Lake burning with fire and brimstone, which is the second death. 9 And one of the seven cherubs came to me, he having the seven bowls being filled with the seven last plagues, and spoke with me, saying, Come, I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb. 10 And he carried me in spirit onto a great and high mountain, and showed me the great city, holy Jerusalem, coming down out of Heaven from YAHWEH, 11 having the glory of YAHWEH. And its light was like a very precious stone, as a jasper stone, being clear as crystal, 12 and having a great and high wall, having twelve gates, and twelve cherubs at the gates and names having been inscribed, which are of the twelve tribes of the sons of Israel. 13 From the east, three gates; from the north, three gates; from the south, three gates; and from the west, three gates. 14 And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. 15 And he speaking with me had a golden reed, that he may measure the city, and its gates, and its wall. 16 And the city lies four cornered, even its length as much as the width also. And he measured the city with the reed at twelve thousand furlongs; its length and width and height are equal. 17 And he measured its wall, a hundred and forty four cubits, a measure of a man, which is of a cherub. 18 And the structure of its wall was jasper; and the city was pure gold, like pure glass. 19 And the foundation of the wall of the city having been adorned with every precious stone: The first foundation, jasper; the second, sapphire; the third, chalcedony; the fourth, emerald; 20 the fifth, sardonyx; the sixth, sardius; the seventh, chrysolite; the eighth, beryl; the ninth, topaz; the tenth, chrysoprasus; the eleventh, hyacinth; the twelfth, amethyst. 21 And the twelve gates were twelve pearls; respectively each one of the gates was of one pearl. And the street of the city was pure gold, as transparent glass. 22 And I saw no sanctuary in it, for the Master, YAHWEH Almighty is its sanctuary, and the Lamb. 23 And the city had no need of the sun, nor of the moon, that they might shine in it, for the glory of YAHWEH illuminates it, and its lamp is the Lamb. 24 And the nations of the ones saved will walk in its light; and the kings of the earth bring their glory and honor into it. 25 And its gates may not at all be shut by day, for no night will be there. 26 And they will bring the glory and the honor of the nations into it. 27 And there shall not enter it anything that defiles, or he who practices abominations and lies, but only the ones having been written in the Book of Life of the Lamb.
In verse eight those who become sinful will not be allowed to enter in to the city. What is the definition of sin in scripture ? I John 3:4 Whosoever commits sin transgresses also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law. I John 1:8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. Still think we don’t need to or shouldn’t keep the commandments given to the children of Yisrael ? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What is the New Covenant? Numbers 15:39 And it shall be unto you for a fringe, that all of you may look upon it, and remember all the commandments of the LORD, and do them; and that all of you seek not after your own heart and your own eyes, after which all of you use to go a whoring: This is the next verse after the one we have been looking at. Notice how it talks about not following your own heart but remembering the commandments. Hebrews 10:16 This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the Lord, I will put my commandments into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them;
In the new covenant we are supposed to have his commandments written in our hearts. They are to be a part of us not just a ritual that we do externally but something we live by with every breath we take, and each time our heart beats. Psalms 119:32 I will run the way of your commandments, when you shall enlarge my heart. Proverbs 4:4 He taught me also, and said unto me, Let yours heart retain my words: keep my commandments, and live. Proverbs 7:3 Bind them upon your fingers, write them upon the table of yours heart Jeremiah 31:33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Yisreal; After those days, says the LORD, I will put my commandments in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people. Hebrews 8:10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Yisreal after those days, says the Lord; I will put my commandments into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:
In the last part of our verse is the final part of his command. `al-tsitsith(above, over, upon, or against)-(a floral or wing-like projection, i.e. a forelock of hair, a tassel:--fringe, lock) ha(the)kanaph(an edge or extremity; specifically (of a bird or army) a wing, (of a garment or bed-clothing) a flap) p’thil(twine:--bound, bracelet, lace, line, ribband, thread)t’keleth(the cerulean mussel, i.e. the color (violet) obtained therefrom or stuff dyed therewith:--blue)
On or in the tassels on the edges of our garments we are to entwine a thread of Purple/Blue. Purple/Blue was a very expensive dye and anything made of it was considered very special. It was the color of royalty and the priesthood. Exodus 26:1 Moreover you shall make the tabernacle with ten curtains of fine twined linen, and blue, and purple, and scarlet: with cherubims of cunning work shall you make them. Exodus 28:31 And you shall make the robe of the ephod all of blue. Exodus 39:1 And of the blue, and purple, and scarlet, they made cloths of service, to do service in the holy place, and made the holy garments for Aaron; as the LORD commanded Moses. Acts 16:14 And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, which worshipped God, heard us: whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul. Lydia was a merchant of the color t’kelethby which she became wealthy enough to help Paul while he was in Philipi and take him into her home while he was there. There is no mention of a husband so she supported her household by selling Purple/Blue. A very precious commodity in those days. Having this color thread in the tassel on your garment said something very special about you. It also was there to remind you of the royal nature of the commandments and your need to sacrifice to keep them. It truly would have been a sacrifice for the average person to buy a Purple/Blue thread just for that purpose considering the expense. This color would denote Kings and Priests in the world of the Messiah.
Revelation of John 1:6 And has made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen. Revelation of John 5:10 And have made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth. Wearing this tassel with the Purple/Blue thread in it would certainly set the person apart from the average person walking the streets. Exodus 19:6 And all of you shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy6918nation. These are the words which you shall speak unto the children of Yisreal. Strong’s 6918 qadowshkaw-doshe' or qadosh {kaw-doshe'}; from 'qadash' (6942); sacred (ceremonially or morally); (as noun) God (by eminence), an angel, a saint, a sanctuary:--holy (One), saint. BDB Definition: 1) sacred, holy, Holy One, saint, set apart Part of Speech: adjective same Word by TWOT Number: 1990b
My Conclusion All of the nations of the world were to become part of Yisrael through Ephraim and we are to have the commandments in our heart to do them not to earn salvation but to show our faith and love toward YHWH. We are to be obviously Holy/Set Apart from everyone else. One of the ways to do this would be to divest ourselves of the trappings of religion and worldly things and keep the commandments, to wear the Tassels with a thread of Purple/Blue on our garments. What do you think ? I Peter 1:16 Because it is written, Be all of you holy; for I am holy. Leviticus 11:44 For I am the LORD your God: all of you shall therefore sanctify yourselves, and all of you shall be holy; for I am holy: neither shall all of you defile yourselves with any manner of creeping thing that creeps upon the earth. Leviticus 19:2 Speak unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, and say unto them, All of you shall be holy: for I the LORD your God am holy. The children of Yisrael were called to be Holy/Set Apart from all other peoples. Deuteronomy 14:2 For you are an holy people unto the LORD your God, and the LORD has chosen you to be an exclusive people unto himself, above all the nations that are upon the earth. Deuteronomy 26:19 And to make you high above all nations which he has made, in praise, and in name, and in honour; and that you may be an holy people unto the LORD your God, as he has spoken.
