2. Native American Tribes of Texas CADDO • The Caddos Indians lived in East Texas. • Although mostly in Texas, the tribe was also located in Oklahoma.

3. The Caddos Indians were excellent farmers growing: 2 types of Corn Squash 5 types of Beans Sunflower seeds Tobacco They divided their work: Caddos women gathered berries, acorns, and other roots grown in the area to eat. Caddos men hunted for deer, turkey, rabbits and squirrels.

4. The Caddos are famous for their pottery. They made 2 types of pottery: Fine ware – Made to be admired, it was polished and decorated and used for serving food and drink for religious ceremonies. Coarse ware - Everyday use pottery. Used for cooking and for storage.

5. The Caddos Grass Thatched House • The Caddos Indians shelter consisted of: • Grass huts as homes • They used native grass called “Caddo Swamp Grass” to construct them • They built two homes, one for summer and one for winter • The winter house was large, about 40 feet tall, and it had a fire pit in the middle and beds and furniture surrounded it. • The summerhouse had a roof and open sides. The floor was special because it was raised and made of woven cane, which was important because of the hot Texas summers and it allowed the breeze to come through. • As shown in the picture above they were built side by side.

6. The Caddos Indians grew cotton, which they spun into threads and dyed with vegetable dyes. The Caddos women then weaved the threads into beautiful clothes. The Caddos Indians used leather to make beautiful moccasins. They used beads and embroidery to decorate their moccasins.
