  5. What are emotions? • They are states of feeling that result in physical and psychological changes that influence our behavior.

  6. Howard Gardner definition of intelligence • It is a biopsychological potential to process information that can be activated in a cultural setting to solve problems or create products that are of value in a culture (1983).

  7. Intelligence modalities (1) • Musical intelligence: sensitivity to sounds, rhythms, tones and music (pitch and melody). • Visual-spatial intelligence: spatial judgement and the ability to visualize with the mind’s eye. • Verbal-linguistic intelligence: displays a facility with words and languages • Logical-mathematical: refers to logic, abstractions, reasoning, numbers and critical thinking.

Intelligence modalities (2) • Bodily-kinesthetic: control of bodily motions and capacity to handle objects skillfully. • Interpersonal: sensitivity to others’ moods, feelings, temperaments, motivations and ability to work in a team. • Intrapersonal: introspective and self-reflective capacities

  9. Definition of EI • “Ability to recognize, understand and manage our own emotions, and to • recognize, understand and influence other people’s emotions”

  12. Ways to create emotionally intelligent teams • Have a ring-leader • Identify team-members strengths and weaknesses • Spark passion • Build team norms • Develop ways of managing stress • Allow team members to have a voice • Encourage team members to work and relax together

  13. Benefits of EI • Communicate better • Reduce anxiety and stress • Defuse conflicts • Improve relationships • Empathize with others • Overcome life’s challenges

How to use EI • Focus more on “us” and less on “me” • Use more personal forms of communication • Ask questions about the other person’s experiences • Learn about your people’s expectations • Intensify your attention • Increase your empathy • Put the other persons’ needs ahead of yours • Give generous recognition

Models of EI • Ability Model (Salovey and Mayer): perceiving emotions, using emotions, understanding emotions, managing emotions. • Mixed Model (Goleman): self-awareness, self-regulation, social skill, empathy and motivation. • Trait Model (Petrides): it is applied within a personality framework and therefore it is closer to emotional self-efficacy.

  16. Classic personality traits • Sanguine (Damawiyy): lively, optimistic, buoyant, carefree; high risk tolerance • Choleric (Safrawiyy): goal oriented person • Phlegmatic (Balghamyy): a people person • Melancholic (Sauda): love traditions (shy adventure or novelty)
