The Hole in the Ozone • For billions of years the ozone layer had protected life on Earth from the sun’s ultraviolet rays. • In 1985, scientists were troubled when they discovered that there was a hole in the ozone layer over the Antarctica. • 1% drop in Ozone = 2% increase in harmful UV radiation
