General Statement About CSA • Mandated to conduct socioeconomic surveys and compile national statistics from administrative records • Coordinate the national statistical system (NSS) of the country and be involved in statistical capacity building activities • Central data source for the country. • Since the launching of its Integrated Household Survey Program (IHSP) in the 1980’s, the agency has been able to conduct about 11 different surveys annually • Annual, bi-annual and ad-hoc survey programs: • Livestock, Agricultural , Industry ,Household Income/Expenditure , Welfare Monitoring , Price , Labour Force, DHS etc. • Population and Housing Censuses (1984, 1994,2007) • Agricultural Census (2002) • Consumer Price Index, Price Data, and other indicators
Identifying User Needs • User needs were Identified through: • User Producer Forum • Users Feed Back • The following main needs were identified • Access to Aggregated Data • Access to Micro Data • Access to Indicators • Access to Time Series Data • Access to Food and Agriculture Related Data • Better Documentation for Better Utilization of Data • International Standards for Metadata Documentation • Access the data from anywhere -Electronic Method of Dissemination • Application of GIS for Dissemination • One Stop Shopping Service
Responding to User Needs The CSA Dissemination Strategy Put in place the international standards for documentation SDMX, DDI, Dublin Core, Aggregated data: Freely available The Annual Agricultural Sample surveys The Monthly Price Indices The Quarterly and yearly Business statistics The Annual Employment and Unemployment surveys The DHS survey The Population and Housing Census The Labour Force Survey.. Etc… Method of Dissemination Internet Hard copy for government institutions and donors Sell of Publications
Responding to User Needs • NEW…. Access to Micro data • “The Directive Issued Procedures to Establish Procedures for Accessing Raw Data” • The raw data access is administered by the directive set by the Council of Ministers. • Why do we needed the directives? • Responding to the demand in a more comprehensive manner. • Clear Guideline for free access of the raw data • All development partners contributed for the survey or census • All government institutions • Students working on their Masters or PhD • Clear procedure for accessing the raw data by all users through a legal basis; • Entertain request for raw data for further analysis

Tools Put in Place to Address User Needs GIS-Atlas of Ethiopian Rural Economy • The Atlas of the Ethiopian Rural Economyprovides an extensive set of maps at a disaggregated level of the context within which members of the rural population of Ethiopia acquire their livelihoods through agriculture
Tools Put in Place to Address User Needs GIS-Rural Facilities Atlas These atlases use the data obtained during the cartographic work for the 2007 population and housing census. It includes a special distribution of basic facilities in the rural areas of the country
Tools Put in Place to Address User Needs GIS-The Census Atlas serve as an important and accessible source of spatially disaggregated information on the demographic makeup, living conditions, and housing characteristics of Ethiopia. the atlas will contribute to an improved understanding of spatial transformations within the country, as well as information that informs opportunities for economic growth at a spatially disaggregated level.
