  1. Farms Farms and more Farms!!!!

  2. The Great Plains– Open country that eventually became very good land for farming. Compare this map to the one we created in class. What do you notice?

  3. The Great Plains were called “The Great American Desert” by a army explorer named Stephen Long • Why did the Great Plains change from a place known as a “desert” to booming farmland? • 2 Reasons: • Railroads - Expanded railroad networks made it easier to ship goods back east to where they could be sold. • Government passes The Homestead Act – people paid small fee to live on land, and after five years of farming they were given ownership.

  4. Difficulties of early life on the plains: • Lack of trees and water • Very hot in the summer • Danger of prairie fires. • Swarms of grasshoppers destroyed crops “I’m an evil prairie fire that will destroy your crops, ARRRR!!!” “I’m an evil prairie grasshopper that will eat your crops, ARRRRRR”

  5. The Great Plains became known as The Wheat Belt because of the huge wheat production. MMMMMmmmmm wheat bread is so GOOOD.

  6. Some key farming terms: Dry Farming – Planting seeds deep in the ground where there was enough moisture for them to grow. Sodbusters – People who plowed the soil. Bonanza Farms – Huge farms that developed because of new machines.

  7. Bonanza – It’s like Banana, but with a Z

  8. Your Job: Not everyone knew about the opportunities in the west and the government programs (Homestead Act) that would help them move there. Classwork Assignment: Create an advertisement (in color!) that the US Government could print in the nation’s newspapers encouraging people to move west and settle lands. Things to consider: What can people do when they travel west? How might they be able to get there? How will the government help them? You can work ALONE or with ONE PARTNER.
