  1. What is PROMOTE? New statewide training that: • Supports individuals with developmental disabilities • Creates a positive culture allowing team members to work together • Assists individuals who may be under stress • Enables staff to respond safely to behavioral crises, should they arise

  2. Who Must Learn PROMOTE? All direct support professionals, clinicians, and supervisors at OPWDD operated or supported residences are required to take the training.

  3. What does PROMOTE teach? Effective ways to develop positive relationships by equipping staff with useful support strategies Primary and secondary tools that enable staff to manage behavioral events Techniques on how staff can help individuals form connections with others, create opportunities for leisure, and build self-confidence

  4. PROMOTE Zones PROMOTE represents our emotional and behavioral experiences through the use of a “Zones” model with Green, Yellow and Red “Zones” The person is having a good day and is safe, confident and connected to those around them. The person is experiencing increased stress and is having trouble coping. The person has lost emotional control and may be engaging in behavior that compromises the safety of themselves or others.

  5. When Will Staff Be Trained in PROMOTE? Training for direct support staff in OPWDD operated and supported residences began in January 2013. Full implementation is expected by 2014.
