AcademyofScubaisNowOperationBluePride’sWestCoast TrainingFacilityforDisabledVeterans SeeWhatNewPartnershipsMeanforOperationBluePride Phoenix,AZ,March21,2014-AcademyofScubaannouncedtodayithasbeenselectedasthe WestCoasttrainingsiteforOperationBluePride(OBP)scubacertificationprogramforveterans. OBPisanonprofitorganizationoutofChicagofocusingonscubadivetrainingforveteranswho areseverelymentallyandphysicallyinjured.Divingispartoftheirrehabilitationandhelpsthem integratebackintosocietywhileprovidingthemwithasenseofadventureandaccomplishment. Oncescubacertified,veteranswillhelpwithconservationprojectsthroughOperationBluePride. CurrentlyOBPisworkingonanewpartnershipwithAtlanticWhiteSharkConservancy.AWSC's visionistoincreaseknowledgeofAtlanticwhitesharksandchangepublicperceptiontoconserve thespeciesandensurebiologicallydiversemarineecosystems. OperationBluePrideandAtlanticWhiteSharkConservancywillberaisingfundstosendOBP veteransonwhitesharkresearchandtaggingtripswithfourveteransjoiningeachtrip.Academy ofScubaisslatedtostarttrainingveteransinMay2014,andislookingtotrainover50peoplein thenext12months. SpeciallytrainedstaffatAcademyofScubawillworkwiththespecificneedsoftheveterans. StaffatAcademyofScubahavebeentrainedbythefollowingagencies:HandicappedScuba Association(HSA),NAUIAdaptiveprogram,andtheSDIScubabilityprogram. AcademyofScubahasmultiplelocationsinPhoenixArizona,thatiseasilyaccessiblefromthe WestCoastandtheirfacilitiesallowdivetrainingyearround.OperationBluePrideisusingScuba Emporium,outofChicago,fortheEastCoasttrainingfacility. “ThetwonewlocationsgiveOBPtheopportunitytogoaboveandbeyonditsoriginalamountof veteranstocertify.Bothlocationsbringyearsofexperiencewithatruepassiontohelpveterans anddowhatevertheycandotohelpourreturningveteranswithoutexploitingthem.Iamreally lookingforwardtothisyear’snewpartnership,”saidChrisMaddeford,fromOperationBluePride. “What’sgreataboutthisprogramisthattheygetscubacertifiedwhichisagreatfirststep,butit’s onlythebeginningbecausethegoodtheycandowiththeconservationprogramsthrough OperationBluePridewillbenefitthemandtheoceans,”saidJohnFlanders,COatAcademyof Scuba. “OBPiseagertogetourveteransenvelopedinthisexcitingpartnershiptocontinueourmissionof havingreturningcombatveteranshelpsaveouroceans'marinelife,whileselfhealing,”said Madderford. “Ithinkit’sinvigorating,”Flanderssaid.“Whenyouhavesomeonewhohasgonethrougha traumaticsituation,andtheygetinthewater,it’sgreatseeingthesparkintheireyes.These veteransareamazingandtheywanttoprovetothemselvesthattheycanovercomeobstacles.
