  1. Homosexuality is illegal in 76 countries… …and is punishable by death in 5. Gay marriage is illegal in 43 states... …and is not recognized by federal law.

  2. 9 in 10 LGBT youth report being bullied. They are 4 timesmore likely to commit suicide. 1/3 of all LGBT youth have attempted to end their life. 30% of all teen suicides are by LGBT youth.

  4. Though just 44% of all hate crimes are reported… …LGBT people are among the biggest targets. 18% of all hate crimes are against LGBT people… …when only 3% of the population is LGBT. Overall crime statistics declined in 2010… …but hate crimes increased 13% that year. Though data varies, anti-gay crimes are more likely to affect trans women and people of color.

  5. Hate crimes happen to LGBT people whether we hear about it… Matthew Shepard Angie Zapata Harvey Milk Brandon Teena 1976-1998 1989-2008 1930-1978 1972-1993 …or their loved ones grieve outside the spotlight...

  6. Sakia Gunn, 15 – Murdered in Newark , NJ, because she was a lesbian. Lawrence “Larry” King, 15 – Killed in a school shooting because he was gay. Erika Keels, 20 – Trans woman murdered in Philadelphia, 2007. Gwen Araujo– Trans woman raped and murdered by two men. JadonHigganbothan, 4 – Murdered by his father for “acting gay”. Andrew Anthos, 72 – Disabled gay man, beaten to death. Barry Winchell, U.S. Army – Beaten to death because of his rumored relationship with a trans woman. Venus Xtravaganza – Trans woman featured in the film “Paris Is Burning”, beaten to death before the film’s release.

  8. June 1969 – The Stonewall Riots mark the beginning of the LGBT Rights Movement in the United States. Since then, the fight for equality has made bigger strides for liberation than at arguably any time in American history.

Same-sex marriage is now legal in eight states and the District of Columbia… New York | Massachusetts | Maine New Hampshire | Vermont | Iowa | Connecticut Washington (June 2012) | Maryland (Jan 2013) And domestic partnerships or civil unions are legal in ten others… New Jersey | Hawaii | Delaware | Illinois | Wisconsin Oregon | Nevada | California | Rhode Island

  11. “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” (DADT), which prohibited being openly gay in the military, was repealed in 2010.

  12. In 2003, Lawrence v. Texas decriminalized “sodomy”, legalizing same-sex activity in all 50 states. In 2008, the UN General Assembly adopted a declaration condemning violence and discrimination of LGBT people worldwide; 85 nations have signed so far. In 2009, the passage of the Matthew Shepard Act expanded federal hate crimes laws to include gender identity and sexual orientation. In 2012, the U.S. Dept. of Housing & Urban Development prohibited discrimination against LGBT people in federal housing programs.
