Course 110 The Critical Steps Required for Dimmer Selection
Critical Steps | Introduction Mechanical Dimmer versus Smart Dimmer • “The Maestro Style • Dimmer” • Standard Fade On/Off • Preset light levels • LED feedback • Fade times • Double Press Full Bright • F.A.S.S. required
Critical Steps | Choosing Proper Dimmer Step 1 | Identify Switch Leg Step 2 | Identify Load Type Step 3 | Identify Maximum Wattage Capacity Step 4 | Ganging and De Rating Considerations Step 5 | Identify Proper Dimmer
Critical Steps | IdentifySwitch Leg • Switch leg vs. Circuit • Switch Leg: Switched location to load • Circuit: “Breaker to Breaker” • How many switched locations are on the leg? • What lighting load is being controlled by that Switch Leg? • New Construction versus Retrofit

Critical Step #1 Identify Switch Leg Installation of a Lutron “Multi-Location” Smart Dimmer • Single-pole Application (Single Pole Single Throw/ 2way) (one switched location) • Installs exactly like a light switch! • Three-way (Single Pole Double Throw) (two switched locations) • Example: hallway, stairwell, room with multiple entrances • Install 1 multi-location dimmer or Hybrid Keypad • If dimmer - either line or load side • If Hybrid Keypad – load side only • Install 1 “Remote Dimmer” in other location • Wire travelers in parallel • Four-way (Double Pole Double Throw) (third and above switched locations, in between line and load side 3-ways) • Example: large hallway with a turn, perimeter outdoor lighting • Electrical code allows for 10 switched locations, therefore, 2 Three Ways, 8 Four Ways. • Install 1 multi-location dimmer or Hybrid Keypad • Up to 9 “Remote Dimmers” in all other locations (including “other 3-way” and all 4-ways) • Communication traveler is shared, reducing need for four wires down to 3

Critical Step #2 Identify Load Type/LV Transformer Type • Incandescent/Halogen • Fluorescent • LED • Low Voltage Transformers – Magnetic / Electronic
Critical Step #2 Identify Load Type/LV Transformer Type • Incandescent/Halogen (Choose Inc/Hal Rated Dimmer) • Incandescent (A, Candelabra, R, PAR and MR Lamp Types)- A lamp Avg 2000 KWH • Wide Lumen Scope (Candela rating) • Fantastic Color Rendering • Relation to objective / Illumination (Foot Candles or LUX) • Luminance, Low Lumens per Watt • Warm Yellow Hue (Color Temperature) • Highly inefficient lamp, Mr. Edison’s simple “tungsten filament.” • Halogen Incandescent (A, R, PAR and *MR Lamp Types)- A lamp Avg 6000 KWH • “Incandescent Lamp with a sweeper!” / More efficient than • standard incandescent, due to halogen gas • Color Rendering • Cooler, Whiter Hue (Color Temperature)
Critical Step #2 Identify Load Type/LV Transformer Type • Fluorescent (Dimming Ballast and Fluorescent Dimmer or CFL “direct dimming”) • Very broad Lumen Scope (Candela rating) • Moderate Color Rendering • Relation to objective / Illumination • Foot Candles or LUX • Luminance, Medium Lumens for Watt • Cooler than Halogen and Incandescent, Blue White Hue (Color Temperature) • More efficient than halogen and incandescent. • Fluorescent Circular Tubes (Avg 12000KWH) • T8, T12 (inches), U Bent -etc • Compact Fluorescent • Compact Fluorescent with the Edison Base
Critical Step #2 Identify Load Type/LV Transformer Type LEDs Specific LED Driver and Specific LED Dimmer -for Specific LEDs or LED “direct dimming” – again specific dimmer with specific LEDs! –typically neutral wire based reverse phase, sometimes forward phase or Adaptive • Typically a narrow Lumen Scope – however this is changing • Range from very low CRI – all the way to “moderate” CRI • Relation to objective / Illumination • Foot Candles or LUX • Luminance, High Lumens per Watt • “The wild west” of Color Temperature (typically a very “profound” color of light) • More efficient than halogen, incandescent and fluorescent- “ • LEDs are now available in A lamp, MR, PAR, R – all sorts of lamp formats! • Up to 50,000 hour bulb life (every 15watts of INC can be converted to 1watt of LED) • Substantially cooler to the touch • Future of energy efficient lighting • Lutron “Center for Excellence” –testing LEDs, leading • in LED standards (Only UL certified LED dimmers) • www.lutron.com/led
Critical Step #2 Identify Load Type/LV Transformer Type • Low Voltage Transformers • A Low Voltage Transformer can be applied to multiple different load types • and lamp types. • MR Lamps are the most popular application (MR8,MR16- measured in “8ths of an inch”), • with either Incandescent, Halogen Incandescent or LED load types • Magnetic Low Voltage Transformer • Heavy, magnetic coil-based • When controlling Inc/Inc Hal lighting, functions with “standard” MLV/Inc/Halogen dimmer • When controlling LEDs, may function with neutral wire based forward phase dimmer • Electronic Low Voltage Transformer • “Cigarette pack” or “Stick of butter” sized • Reverse Phase Control requires special reverse phase dimmer, with a neutral • If transformer is applied to an LED, rather than Inc/Hal – it may disqualify dimmer
Critical Step #3 Calculate Maximum Wattage on Switch Leg Maximum Wattage of Fixture Quantity of Fixtures on Leg Maximum Wattage of Lighting on Leg X = Dimmer Must be Rated to Control Equal To or Greater Than this Number
Magnetic Low Voltage Calculation Maximum Wattage of Fixture Maximum Volt Amps of Lighting on Leg Quantity of Fixtures on Leg X X = 1.25 Dimmer Must be Rated to Control Equal To or Greater Than this Number
Critical Step #4 Calculate Max Wattage Changes Due to Ganging & Derating More Dimmers = More Heat = Less Wattage Capacity Ganged on One Side Ganged on Two Sides
Critical Step #4 Calculate Max Wattage Changes Due to Ganging & Derating More Dimmers = More Heat = Less Wattage Capacity
Critical Step #5 – Choose the Proper Dimmer! Utilize: • Software • Quote Tools • Website • Literature/Documentation
Critical Steps | Choosing Proper Dimmer Step 1 | Identify Switch Leg Step 2 | Identify Load Type Step 3 | Identify Maximum Wattage Capacity Step 4 | Ganging and De Rating Considerations Step 5 | Identify Proper Dimmer
