Power keypad with Hot & Neutral • If neutral is connected, on Hybrid Keypad, then the Hybrid Keypad must be on Load Side. That said, in this configuration, the Hybrid is on “Load Side,” by default
Single Pole, Three Way, Four Way Summary • Three-Way (Single Pole Double Throw or Three-Way) (two switched locations) • Option C: (demonstrated in forthcoming slide) • Install 1 Multi-Location Dimmer on line or load side • Alter Three-Way Switch Leg, by creating a Single Pole • Install 1 “Pico ” in other location • If Multi-Location Dimmer is a “Neutral Wire Device,” then it must be installed on the Load Side. That said, in this configuration, the dimmer is on “Load Side” by default • Option D: (demonstrated in forthcoming slide) • Install 1 Multi-Location Dimmer on line or load side • Alter Three-Way Switch Leg, by creating a Single Pole • Install 1 “Standard Keypad” in “former” Three-Way Location. Power keypad with Hot & Neutral • If Multi-Location Dimmer is a “Neutral Wire Device,” then it must be installed on the Load Side. That said, in this configuration, the dimmer is on “Load Side” by default
Single Pole, Three Way, Four Way Summary • Three-Way (Single Pole Double Throw or Three-Way) (two switched locations) • Option E: (demonstrated in forthcoming slide) • Install 1 Hybrid Keypad Dimmer on line or load side • Install 1 “Remote Dimmer” in other location • If neutral is connected, on Hybrid Keypad, then the Hybrid Keypad must be on Load Side. • Wire travelers in parallel • Four-Way (Double Pole Double Throw or Four-Way) (third and above switched location, in between line and load side Three-Ways) • Example: large hallway with a turn, perimeter outdoor lighting • Electrical code allows for up to 10 switched locations, on a leg • Therefore, maximum of two Three Way Switches and up to eight Four Way Switches! • Install 1 Multi-Location Dimmer or Hybrid Keypad • If dealer decides to retain Four-Way Switch Leg Wiring: Up to 9 “Remote Dimmers” in all other locations (including “other Three-Way” and all Four-Ways) • Communication traveler is shared, reducing need for four wires down to 3 • If dealer decides to “remove” Four-Way Switch Leg Wiring: Install Standard Wall Keypad or Pico, in place of “former” Four-Way Switch locations • Dealer could also deploy a “mixture” of the above choices • Active Neutral Wire Device, on Load Side

Critical Step #2 Identify Load Type/LV Transformer Type • Incandescent/Halogen • Fluorescent • LED • Low Voltage Transformers – Magnetic / Electronic
Critical Step #2 Identify Load Type/LV Transformer Type • Incandescent(Choose Incandescent, Halogen Rated Dimmer) • Common Lamp Types: A, Candelabra, R, PAR and MR Lamp Types • Lumen Scope Example - Candela rating • Discuss Illumination (Foot Candles, LUX)and Luminance • Very High on The Color Rendering Index (CRI) • Warm Yellow Hue (Color Temperature) • Low Lumens per Watt • Avg A Lamp – 2,000 KWH • Highly inefficient lamp, Mr. Edison’s simple “tungsten filament.”
Critical Step #2 Identify Load Type/LV Transformer Type • Halogen (Choose Incandescent, Halogen Rated Dimmer) • Common Lamp Types: A, R, PAR and MR Lamp Types • “Incandescent Lamp with a sweeper!” • More efficient than standard incandescent, due to internal halogen gas • Lumen Scope Example • Discuss Illumination (Foot Candles, LUX) and Luminance • High on The Color Rendering Index (CRI) (not quite as high as standard incandescent) • Cooler, Whiter Hue (Color Temperature) • Medium Lumens per Watt • Avg A Lamp – 6,000 KWH
Critical Step #2 Identify Load Type/LV Transformer Type • Fluorescent (Dimming Ballast and Fluorescent Dimmer or CFL “Direct Dimming”) • Common Lamp Types: T8, T12, U-Bent, CFL and CFL Edison Base • Broad Lumen Scope (Candela rating) • Discuss Illumination (Foot Candles, LUX) and Luminance • Moderate on The Color Rendering Index (CRI) • Cooler, Blue-White Hue (Color Temperature) • High Lumens per Watt • Avg 6,000 – 15,000 KWH • More efficient than halogen and incandescent.
Critical Step #2 Identify Load Type/LV Transformer Type • Low Voltage Transformers • A Low Voltage Transformer inputs high voltage and outputs low voltage, to the lamp • A Low Voltage Transformer can be applied to a variety of different lamp types and load types • MR Lamps are the most popular application (MR8, MR16 - measured in “8ths of an inch”) • Incandescent, Halogen Incandescent and LED are the most common load types
Critical Step #2 Identify Load Type/LV Transformer Type • Magnetic Low Voltage Transformers • Heavy, magnetic coil-based “box” – located behind each lamp or remotely mounted for the entire switch leg or for a group of lamps • When MLV transformer is applied to Incandescent or Halogen Incandescent lighting, choose a “standard” MLV/Inc/Halogen dimmer • When MLV transformer is applied to LEDs, it may or may not function properly with a neutral wire based forward phase dimmer. Often times, dimming performance will be poor. In order to investigate a specific application, consult www.lutron.com/leds • When “remotely” Mounted – MLV transformer can be difficult to locate MLV Transformer
Critical Step #2 Identify Load Type/LV Transformer Type • Electronic Low Voltage Transformers • Relatively small - “Cigarette pack” or “Stick of butter” sized box, located behind each lamp or remotely mounted for the entire switch leg or for a group of lamps • ELV Transformer requires a special reverse phase dimmer, with a neutral, known as an Electronic Low Voltage Dimmer • Choose an Electronic Low Voltage Dimmer or an Adaptive Dimmer (forward and reverse phase)
Critical Step #2 Identify Load Type/LV Transformer Type • Electronic Low Voltage Transformers • If transformer is applied to an LED, the LED may or may not dim properly with a Phase Adaptive Dimmer. Again, consult www.lutron.com/leds • If you are unable to locate a remotely mounted transformer and you are unsure if the transformer is Magnetic or Electronic, choose a Phase Adaptive Dimmer
Critical Step #3 Calculate Maximum Wattage on Switch Leg Maximum Wattage of Fixture Quantity of Fixtures on Leg Maximum Wattage of Lighting on Leg X = Dimmer Must be Rated to Control Equal To or Greater Than this Number Remember, if possible, use “Fixture Maximum” for your calculation Light Bulbs can easily be changed…. Fixtures are more permanent!
Special Calculation for Magnetic Low Voltage Transformer Maximum Wattage of Fixture Maximum Volt Amps of Lighting on Leg Quantity of Fixtures on Leg X X = 1.25 Dimmer Must be Rated to Control Equal To or Greater Than this Number
Critical Step #4 Calculate Changes Due to Ganging & De-Rating Ganged Dimmers = Additional Heat = Less Wattage Capacity Ganged on One Side Ganged on Two Sides
Critical Step #4 Calculate Changes Due to Ganging & De-Rating
Critical Step #5 – Choose the Proper Dimmer Utilize: • System Software • Quote Tools • Website • Literature/Documentation • Apps
