  2. Waves 1) What determines the size of a wave and how do they move? • The size of a wave is determined by wind speed, duration, and fetch (distance) • As waves move, each parcel of water revolves in a loop (Eventually returning to its former position)

  3. Waves cont. 2) What are the most important dimensions for a wave, and how are they found? • Height (From Crest to Trough) • Wavelength ( From Crest to Crest, or Crest to Trough)

  4. Waves cont. 3) What place propagates the highest waves, and why is it important? • The mid-ocean ridges, it connects one ocean base line to the other. • Knowing this effect is helpful for forecasting waves because modelers can better estimate where the strongest wave energy will likely go.

  5. Tsunamis 4) What is a Tsunami? • Tsunamis are large series of Waves of extremely long wavelength and period (length) usually generated by a violent, impulsive disturbance or activity near the coast or in the ocean.

Formation of Tsunamis 5) Where are Tsunamis frequently generated? • By shallow earthquakes all around the pacific (This accounts for 85% of Tsunamis). • However those from earthquakes in the tropical Pacific tend to be modes in size and their energy decays rapidly with distance. • This is not the case with Tsunamis generated by great earthquakes in the North Pacific or along the Pacific coast of South America.
