Expanding Brackets Grade D/C 19/03/2013 Learning Objectives: • To expand a bracket (basic). • To expand a bracket (intermediate). • To expand a bracket (advanced).
Starter • On whiteboards, simplify the following: 12f4g2h3 x 8f7g5h5 b3 x b2 3c2 x 7c5 4de x 6d2e3
Expanding Brackets • In algebra, expand usually means multiply out. • To expand a bracket you multiply each term inside the bracket by the term outside the bracket. 4(a + 6) = 4a+ 24
EXAMPLES: 7(m – 5) 6r(4 + 5r3) 4gh(3g2 – 8h3) 7m– 35 24r+30r4 12g3h– 32gh4 • NOTE: • You can check your answer by factorising the expression.
Starter 3(5x + 8) 4x(3x– 2) 9xy(x – 3y) 15x+ 24 12x2– 8x 9x2y– 27xy2
QUESTIONS • Expand the brackets in the following questions: • Answers can be found at the end of this presentation.
