  1. How do I get the students to work for me?

  2. Starter • What barriers to learning have you come across so far? • (LC) Discussion (think about order of contributions). Class spider diagram. Higher order questioning for most able.

  4. Haim Ginott –’The Learner’s Dimension’ • I’ve come to the frightening conclusion that I am the decisive element in the classroom. It’s my personal approach that creates the climate, it’s my daily mood that makes the weather. As a teacher, I possess a tremendous power to make a child’s life miserable or joyous. I can be a tool of torture, or an instrument of inspiration. I can humiliate or humour, hurt or heal. In all situations, it’s my response that decides, whether a crisis will be escalated or de-escalated and a child humanized or de-humanized.

  5. Main 1 • Read the section ‘The importance of importance’ • How far do you agree with the sentiments here? • (LC) What one action do you need to work on?

  6. Main 2 • But – do not be a pushover. Be calm and dispassionate AND TEACH BEHAVIOUR. • Read section 4; ‘Teaching behaviour’ • (LC) What do you need to do more of? • (LC) Add any more of your own ideas.

  7. Main 3 • Apply the advice! • How would you deal with the following scenarios?

  8. Plenary • Discuss actions. • Alternative suggestions. • Complete the grid.
