  1. The blueberry in Valtellina: a new area of cultivation in Lombadia (North Italy) Luca Folini – Fondazione Fojanini di Studi Superiori, Via Valeriana, 32 23100 Sondrio Italy www.fondazionfojanini.it e-mail luca.folini@provincia.so.it Rossana Tonesi – Regione Lombardia, Direzione Generale Agricoltura P.zza IV Novembre, 5 20124 Milano – Italy Rossana_Tonesi@regione.lombardia.it Valtellina is an Alpine valley, east to west orientated, located in Lombardy (Northern Italy), corresponding to the upper course of Adda river with a very sunny side. Nearly 1200 ha are occupied by apple orchards and other 1200 by grape, above all in the alluvial fans. In the last 10 years in this area the growers plant the Vaccinium corymbosum. They already knew the Vaccinium myrtillus in the wood near the valley. Actually there are about 10 ha in production with an increasing di 7000 bushes every year. The main varieties for the area are: Duke and Brigitta. The first for the early production and the second for the storage. The Fojanini Foundation has trials with University of Milan and Piacenza about: • Regional project: “Varieties valutation and coltural technical for the filiera of little fruits for the fresh market and IV gamma” Regional Program Reserch 2004–2006; • Vaccinium corymbosum varieties selection: Chandler, Sharpblue, Misty, Giorgia Gem, Elisabeth, Bluetta, Blue Crop, Legacy, O’Neal, Legacy, Ozark Blue, Biloxy, Coville, Darrow, Patriot; • Vaccinium ashei varieties selection: Ozark Blue and Centurion; • Regional project: “Valorizzazione delle produzioni vitifrutticole valtellinesi mediante metodi innovativi (INNOVI’)” Regional Program Reserch 2004–2006.
