The HEAR: technical developments 8 March 2012 Macdonald Burlington Hotel, Birmingham, 10.00a.m. – 3.00p.m.
The HEAR c/f Diploma Supplement • Uses key building blocks (sections) of the DS information: • identifying the holder of the qualification • identifying the qualification • the level of qualification • the contents and results gained • the function of the qualification • Additional information • Certification • the national HE System
The HEAR c/f Diploma Supplement The Differences • Paper based • Issued on completion of course • Academic achievements only • Recognised internationally via the “label” • Student record systems hold most of the data • Not accessible electronically by students • Electronic format and possibly paper • Live document referred to during the study by students/ tutors • Academic and personal achievements • Recognised in the UK (currently) • Student record systems do not hold information on personal achievements • Accessible electronically thus it opens new potential
A (non-technical) place to start… Requires a combined effort…strong working relationships between staff from Registry, IT services, Teaching and Learning, Careers and Employability and the Students Union… An electronic document/dataset… the definitive student record (Issue at graduation, storage post graduation, where, how, for how long, continued access)… A formative function… developed over the student lifecycle, updated periodically (access, for review by key players within the institution, (with the students permission, for permitted external audiences, employers/postgraduate tutors)…
Technical stuff… The specification is at: http://www.xcri.org/wiki/index.php/HEAR_1.0b_Specification The HEAR technical documentation is available at: http://www.xcri.org/wiki/index.php/HEAR#Working_Areas. The XML Schema is available at: http://www.xcri.co.uk/HEAR/HEAR_1.0.xsd. The XML instance file is available at: http://www.xcri.co.uk/HEAR/HEAR_test_2011-04-21.xml. The HEAR schema uses the new XCRI-CAP 1.2 schema and supporting schemas, available from the XCRIsubversion repository.
Today… • Presentation and issue raising… • Getting answers and recognising where answers are still needed… what is the continuing technical agenda? • Reminding of existing networks (HEAR-Trial, HEAR-Extension and HEAR-Spec Jiscmail lists)… • Any queries: • Angela McGrane [Angela.McGrane@heacademy.ac.uk] • Rob Ward [rob@recordingachievement.org] • Ruth Drysdale [r.drysdale@jisc.ac.uk]
