1.Know the importance of continuing in Math and Sciences courses in high school. • 2. Know the importance of English courses for college placement. • 3. Involvement in special programs (CART, ROP, etc.)for practical experience. • 4. Consider additional educational enhancement opportunities (High School Enrichment, AP classes) • 5. Study Habits & Time Management. Start now and you will be prepared for things to come. • 6. Volunteer. Medical schools are looking for well rounded students so begin volunteering at clinics, hospitals, hospices, nursing homes, shelters, etc. • 7. Participate in leadership opportunities. • 8. Get good grades. FIRST THINGSFIRST{You’re still in high school,so let’s focus.}
Talk with your parents and explore your possibilities • What can you afford? (Financial Aid, Loans, Savings?) • What location are you looking for? (Move away or stay?) • What do your grades look like? (A’s are different then C’s) • What is your end result? (Medical program or Medical School?) • Community College, CSU, or UC?! Focus on achieving good grades. Medical schools like to see high GPA’s. • Consider participating in your colleges Honors Program. • Complete prerequisites and Major prep for program of interest. • Focus on your study habits & time management . • Prioritize. • Use resources wisely. • (Teachers, College Programs, tutoring, labs; etc.) • Continue to volunteer. • Join Medical Student Associations and Network • Join on campus clubs and associations and get involved. • Stay connected with your college counselor at every stage of your education, always! Seek assistance with Medical School/Medical Program applications at your university with your Health Science Counselor. • Prepare to take MCATS for Medical School students. • Make sure all prerequisites are complete. • Prepare to apply to program of choice. • Continue to achieve good grades. • Continue to stay involved!
