Hislife • He was born in Biscay, in 1915. • He was with the Republicans in the Spanish Civil War. • He was assigned to a parish in Arrasate-Mondragon in 1941 after being in prison. • He set up the Polytechnic School, now Mondragon EskolaPoliteknikoa. • In 1956, fiveyoungpeoplefromthisschoolestablishedthefirstproductioninitiative of whattodayis MCC: ULGOR. • He died in 1976.

MONDRAGON CO-OPERATIVE CORPORATION • In 1959 a credit co-operative, the Caja Laboral Popular-Euskadiko Kutxa( a co-operative bank), was founded • The following years saw the birth of a large number of co-operatives. It was during this period that Fagor Electronica, Fagor Ederlan and Danobat (among others) were set up. • During the seventies, a number of new co-operatives were set up. Much progress was also made in the field of research and development.

Theeightiesweremainlycharacterisedbythedevelopment of theMondragon Co-operativeCorporation (MCC) in response tothechallengeposedbythecreation of theEuropeanEconomicCommunity and theglobalisation of theeconomy. • Duringthenineteennineties, promptedby MCC, theUniversity of Mondragonwas set up as a privateuniversityaimed at satisfyingtheneeds of local companies. • Currently, MCC has over 60 industrial plantsabroad. • Today, half a centuryafteritsfoundation, theMondragon Co-operativeCorporationisthelargestbusinesscorporation in theBasque Country and theseventhlargest in Spain.
