  1. Robust Hierarchical Mobile IPv6(RH-MIP6) An Enhancement Survivability & Fault-Tolerance in Mobile IP System

  2. Outline • Introduction • Previous Work • Architecture(RH-MIPv6) • RH-MIPv6 Operations • Failure Recovery Mechanism • Performance Analysis • Simulation • Conclusion • Reference

  3. Introduction • In the HMIPv6, HAs and MAPs are two points of failure and potential performance bottlenecks. • When the accident attack such as DoS occurs in the HA or the MAP, the failure leads to the loss of network connectivty to all the MNs.

  4. Introduction (cont.) • Router Advertisement received from multiple MAPs, an MN configures two regional care-of address: • Primary RCoA (P-RCoA) • Secondary RCoA (S-RCoA)

  5. Previous Work • The work can be classified into two categories: • Redundancy-based Schemes • Refresh-based Schemes

  6. Architecture

  7. Operations in RH-MIPv6

  8. Operations in RH-MIPv6(Cont.) • Extension to the Binding Update

  9. Failure Recovery Mechanism • CN detects MAP failure • MN detects MAP failure • ICMPv6 error message • Destination unreachable • Packet too big • Time exceed • Parameter problem

  10. Failure Recovery Mechanism(cont.)

  11. Performance Analysis

  12. Performance Analysis(Cont.) • TRH-MIPV6=Te+ Tf (where CN detects MAP’s failure) TRH-MIPV6=Tg+ Th (where MN detects MAP’s failure)

  13. Simulation • Simulation model

  14. Simulation(Cont.)

  15. Simulation(Cont.)

  16. Simulation(Cont.) • Packet loss time of HMIP is about 2.2s • Packet loss time of RH-MIPv6 is about 0.9s

  17. Conclusion • Fault-tolerance and reliability are critical issues for successful deployment and operation of mobile systems. • RH-MIPv6 has faster recovery time about 60% compared with HMIPv6.
