  1. Paging Extension to Hierarchical Mobile IPv6 Behcet Sarikaya University of Aizu email: sarikaya@u-aizu.ac.jp Presentation of draft-sarikaya-mobileip-hmipv6rp-00.txt 15 December 2000

  2. MIPv6 Regional Paging • Extends draft-ietf-mobileip-ipv6-13.txt • Extends draft-ietf-mobileip-hmipv6-01.txt (basic mode) • An extension that lets MN go to power saving idle mode and lets the visited domain to reduce routing state information. • In line with including handover and registrations known as Layer 2 functionalities into mobile IPv6 => Paging which is also a Layer 2 functionality can be done in Layer 3 using our extension. Behcet Sarikaya

  3. ARCHITECTURE Highest level MAP is called Paging MAP Routers below PMAP can optionally be organized in paging areas. At least one paging area is required Access Routers advertise the paging area ID. Behcet Sarikaya

  4. Going to Idle Mode • MN does idle mode registration, i.e. sends BU with idle mode request to PMAP. • BAck contains Paging Multicast Address Behcet Sarikaya

  5. Idle Mode Registration Request/Reply Behcet Sarikaya

  6. Paging Behcet Sarikaya

  7. Multicast Addresses • IPv6 Multicast Addresses • T = 0 permanent; T=1 transient • Paging area multicast address has the form: FF0E::Paging Area ID such as FF0E::3FFE:501 • Solicited-node multicast address • for the care-of address 3FFE:501:427:1000::A38F:636F • SNMA is FF02:0:0:0:0:1:FF8F:636F Behcet Sarikaya

  8. Entering Active Mode Behcet Sarikaya

  9. Paging Request/Paging Router Advertisement Behcet Sarikaya

  10. Time Slot Based Paging • If there is Layer 2 paging support, Agent Advertisements with paging could be mapped to the messages sent on the paging channel. • Otherwise, e.g. in wireless LANs, access routers can periodically transmit unsolicited multicast router advertisements on a time slot basis whose slot length, advertisement interval and slot sequence number (one of the 4 slots assigned to MN) are advertised in solicited/ unsolicited router advertisements or RAs sent by the access router Behcet Sarikaya

  11. Time Slot Based Paging • Requires RAs sent periodically, and a sequence number with each RA in order to synchronize MN receiver Behcet Sarikaya

  12. CONCLUSIONS • It is a layer 3 paging method, does not require layer 2 support • Idle mode registration • Time slot based paging • IPv6 multicasting is used to page MN • Can be made to work on top of regreg6 as well • A prototype implementation on Linux is being developed Behcet Sarikaya
