  3. LEARNING OBJECTIVES • Recall the “spark” of leadership, a moment when we felt empowered • Identify some of the barriers to fostering leadership among students • Reflect on examples of students addressing some of those barriers and imagine some of the possibilities moving forward

  4. ICEBREAKER What was your formative “leadership” experience in college? Please share with a neighbor or two We’ll share a couple of examples with a large group.

  5. STUDENT LEADERSHIP: BARRIERS • Student as leaders or minions? • Numerous wonderful, yet competing, disconnected campaigns, • Leadership education limited: i.e. purpose, goals, strategies, choices • Limited geography, timeframes, opportunities • Lack of clear sustainability management system to broaden and sustain engagement Compete to Reduce: Campus Conservation Nationals Attend Powershift! March on Washington: No to Keystone XL! Apply for a Fellowship! Attend Summer Eco-Bootcamp! Organize Climate Challenge 2.0!

STUDENT LEADERSHIP: SOLUTIONS: • Online leadership pathway that will motivate, support, and recognize leaders • Offering resources to help students: • Learn how to plan projects (including declaring purpose, setting goals, and making choices such as level and approach) • Including on-line guides, webinars, classes • Lear how to make impact – implement projects, connect with others, document and share their experiences • Build careers and leadership skills: gain hands-on experience, connect to employers, earn certifications from NWF

CAMPUS-COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPClean Energy on CampusNorthland College, Ashland, WI • Students in Photovoltaic Installation class researched, built a 2.1 kW sun-tracking PV array • Offset consumption of the president’s house • Prevents 3.1 tons of CO2 emissions each year Image Credit: Northland College

Small Groups: Examining Campus Policies for Cultivating Student Leadership Group 1: Engaging students on diverse levels: curriculum, campus and community Group 2: Engaging students in diverse ways: projects, policies, education, outreach Group 3: Developing student leaders Group 4: Engaging students in diverse disciplines Group Tasks: • ID someone to capture key ideas • Brainstorm how the campus leadership can support student leadership around the assigned topics • How might the campus shift the management systems and culture to better support student leadership?
