American Colonies • During 1700s, 13 colonies were controlled by King George III (3rd) of England • He was a limited monarch due to the Magna Carta& the Glorious Revolution
3 Causes of the American Revolution (U.S. FREE FROM ENGLAND) • Stamp Act • Britain fought a war against the French in America • To pay for the war, Parliament raised taxes called the Stamp Act – put a tax on paper goods
Reason #1 continued • Colonists had no representatives in Parliament so they said “No Taxation Without Representation” • Boycotted (stopped buying) the paper goods & Parliament repealed (got rid of) the law
2. Boston Tea Party • Britain taxed tea • Colonists (dressed like Native Americans) threw tea into the Boston harbor • Troops occupied the city & closed the harbor (ppl couldn’t trade)
The Boston Massacre • Tension in the US Colonies lead to the killing of five colonists by British soldiers on March 5, 1770.. • What type of reaction would you think the Colonists would give towards this action by the British? • REVOLUTION!
Declaration of Independence- • Document that declares America is no longer a part of England and is now independent • States the American civil rights and the role of government • Origins- where ideas in Dec. of Ind. Came from • Enlightenment- movement in Europe in 1600’s that invented new ideas on science and government • John Locke- Natural Rights (Life Liberty and Property)
