Movin’ On Up • Census – official count of population • 1790 – 4,000,000; 1820 – 10,000,000 • Trip from New York City to Buffalo = 3 Weeks • 363 mile trip • Turnpikes – toll roads • Built by private companies • Congress approved a National Road • Robert Fulton – developed a powerful steamboat engine up the Hudson River • Called the Clermont • Steamboats caused expansion and development of rivers cities like Cincinnati and St. Louis
Making A Way • De Witt Clinton – wanted to link New York City with the Great Lakes • Build a canal – an artificial waterway • Hoping to connect to Lake Erie • Erie Canal – 363 mile connection • Series of locks – separate compartments where water levels are raised and lowered • Although canals were still slow compared to today, they were much faster than wagons • Canals connected the East to the Mid-West • Building canals forced America into an economic boom
Go West, Young Man! • Four New States Between 1790-1803 • Vermont, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Ohio • Five New States Between 1816-1821 • Indiana, Illinois, Mississippi, Alabama, and Missouri • Pioneers settled around the major rivers (Ohio River and Mississippi River) • Communities developed in the West because of the common experiences and backgrounds • Indiana settlers came from KY and TN • Michigan settlers came from New England
